It’s wet in Melbourne at the moment, and I mean that in the ‘rainy and miserable’ sense… not the “haha- you said ‘wet'” way.
Luckily there’s some summery tunes out there that can always brighten up the cloudy grey weather until it changes radically the next minute.
An artist who seems to specialise in such tunes is Kaligraph E, who’s Done Good EP was released on UK-based cassette-tape label 100 Akres last month. Funnily enough, Kaligrah E resides in Melbourne himself, so I’m not sure where the inspiration for these sunny tunes is coming from- but I’d sure love a taste!
The whole EP is available for a choose your price (with no minimum) off of Bandcamp direct download, so you can grab it there for free if you like! It’s got some neat remixes from Fuck the Radio faves Handbook and Vanilla

Been digging this kind of sound lately- a little different from the usual mellow beats and pieces that find their way onto FTR, but it’s a Monday and I’ve just re-charged my batteries with a 13hour sleepfest. Perfect way to start the week with a positive attitude.

Straight up no bullshit hip-hop beats. Beats & Dreams is a magnificent release from the consistently excellent producer Nu Vintage. As only $1 on bandcamp for 27 tracks, it’s an absolute steal.
Grynd is one of the many tracks which bleed true hip-hop purity. It begs for proper verses, yet holds it’s own as a satisfying instrumental listen.

Thought I’d hit you up with something slightly different today; Elizabeth Rose is doing an Aussie tour, and since she’s already established herself as a local favourite on the Summer festival circuit, the news has a-lot of people excited. If you are keen you might want to check out the article I wrote for Purple Sneakers.
The video for her January single titled Ready got released earlier this month. It has lots of colours and seizure-inducing effects- and although I’m not usually a fan of videos that look like someone has vomited rainbows onto film and animated it- the music makes the clip well worth it in this case. Her electronic-pop fusion kind of nods towards the stylings of La Roux, but without sounding like 100 kittens drowning in a pool of acid. Check it.

Star Slinger‘s soulful and joyous music puts a smile on my face.

Aussie Perth-based producer Ta-Ku made an appearance on the Anesthetic mixtape with On the Floor taken from his brill EP Scraps Vol. 2; and more officially- Huh What & Where‘s recent free compilation HW&W Vol. 1.
Tight stuff, great to come back to music like this after a week or two detached from the earth. Pokyo is a neat electronica piece grounded firmly in hip-hop… Expect to see a-lot more of this guy’s name popping up all around; he’s already gained some pretty substantial recognition and support, but we can only sit idly by and wait for him to drop a proper album sometime.

Tree‘s music sits at the helm of a collaborative creative effort which also encompasses visual artists. Warrior comes from the upcoming (and much anticipated) album Splitting Branches, and contains a mish-mash of found-sounds including breaking-eggs, toasters and scissors, as well as a neat 8-bit style Gameboy solo.
Despite the typically non-musical sources of sound, Warrior still holds it’s own as a BRILLIANT (that’s right… it’s getting tagged as BRILLIANT) lo-fi synth-pop piece that’ll keep you coming back. Dreamy but not sleepy, upbeat but not twee, artistic but not pompous, Warrior‘s quality is accessibility through balance. Enough said; you need to listen:

I don’t like playing favourites, but if I absolutely had to- Daedelus would be a strong contender for my favourite producer in the L.A beat scene.
His creative musical works contain inspirational elements from a range of genres including hip-hop, classical do-wop and electronica. Curtians Don’t Talk was released earlier today as an exclusive free mp3 for Mixmag and it’s quality stuff! There’s also a neat interview where Daedelus ‘ quirky yet humble personality really shines.

THE FIRST TRACK TO EARN A BRILLIANCE TAG THIS YEAR!
Chrome Sparks is a USA- based artist who puts out neat music which falls somewhere in the ‘electronic-pop’ area. A wonderfull collaboration featuring the vocal talents of LA-based Steffaloo brought us Still Sleeping sometime around October last year, and it’s a fun track all-round.
Despite a focus on lo-fi folk, Steffaloo‘s voice is accustomed to geting the electronic remix treatment- and it’s a matchmade in heaven when combined with Chrome Sparks‘ dreamy production work. Overall, the track is upbeat enough to happily sway to, but not quite enough to get you embarrassing yourself all sweaty on the dance floor- although I speak for myself; I’m sure after a few too many guava shots you could find hordes of tie-dye clad and glow-stick equipped ravers moving their hands and their butts in a bizarre motion that could be considered dancing along to this great track. :O Another amazing group from the Netherlands! What do they put in the water there?! < Insert compulsory Netherlands marijuana joke here>.
Simply put, Knobsticker‘s Upside Down is deliciously funky- the drums are set in perfect balance between ‘cheesy 80s drum machine’ and ‘sexy disco music’ while the synths are filtered to perfection, guaranteed to make your eardrums feel all groovy. Honestly, I feel like my ears are having the best party- complete with disco ball, multi-coloured light up floor and spiked punchbowl. Also, something about talk-box vocals makes me want to grow an afro and have sex… I was going to backspace that last sentence but I think I’ll leave it.
Comfortably fitting in a neat musical area between Daft Punk and synth-pop groups such as Rat vs Possum– treat your ears with a special free download of one of the tracks off their new album:

Moving away from chillwave today, this track by Finji is more loud and upbeat.
Reminding me off Mu-Gen‘s Fizzdom which I posted way back in 2010, Do Something is powered through by driving hi-hats and an unrelenting bassy kick drum. There’s no easy way to describe it, and I’m going to avoid being too verbose in this post… so give it a download and see what you think 🙂
He’s also giving out his music free on his soundcloud page:

Handbook‘s music is no stranger to people’s ears, at 10,000+ Soundcloud fans, he could easily sit back on his throne of musical accomplishment and feed bullshit to the masses.
But there’s a nostalgic sincerity present throughout Handbook‘s music that brings groups like The Avalanches and perhaps, Bibio to mind. I think ‘sweet’ would be the right way of describing it… not candy sweet or pleased frat boy “sweeeet”; but bringing flowers home to your wife ‘sweet’.
No, despite having followers in the 5 digits, Handbook crafts his music with love. And the wonderful 23 is a good example 🙂

My issue these days is that there are so many amazing artists out there putting out countless good songs- I have a tough time deciding who I want to write about!
Inaudible is without doubt deserving of a post- his music is brilliant. That’s right, he’s getting tagged as BRILLIANT. Welcome to the club Inaudible. I spent the past hour trying to decide which of your songs I was going to post until I finally gave up and picked at random. Echo Chamber is just that perfect level of heavy upbeat glitch-hop that I absolutely love. There are some crazy sounds in this track that suck you in, and on each subsequent listen it becomes clear just how much attention to small details goes into this music.
Echo Chamber does not need vocals to make it better- to the contrary, it’s actually too good for vocals… something every producer of this genre sound strive to achieve in my opinion.
Check out the Scathed Youth EP from Inaudible‘s bandcamp page too- it’s got a few more gems as equally as good as Echo Chamber.
