Spazzkid – Getting to Know You by Chris

It’s been a year since Spazzkid released Desire. The album plays like Bibio soaked in chillwave, and while it’s a little different to what we normally post around here, its always good to treat your ears to some pop-ish music once and awhile.

Elizabeth Rose – Ready by Chris

Thought I’d hit you up with something slightly different today; Elizabeth Rose is doing an Aussie tour, and since she’s already established herself as a local favourite on the Summer festival circuit, the news has a-lot of people excited. If you are keen you might want to check out the article I wrote for Purple Sneakers.

The video for her January single titled Ready got released earlier this month. It has lots of colours and seizure-inducing effects- and although I’m not usually a fan of videos that look like someone has vomited rainbows onto film and animated it- the music makes the clip well worth it in this case. Her electronic-pop fusion kind of nods towards the stylings of La Roux, but without sounding like 100 kittens drowning in a pool of acid. Check it.

Beat Culture – Belong (ft. Steffaloo) by Chris

Beat Culture‘s Goldenback Weaver has been gaining quite a few plays on my iTunes over the past month or so, and with the release of a new collaboration with one of my favourites Steffaloo last month; I think it’s time you started listening to him as-well (that is to say, if you have not-already been).

Belong is a beautiful lo-fi synth-pop style piece. SBTRKT and The XX influence is prevalent, even perhaps some M83 in for good measure. But that’s not to say that Beat Culture has simply mimicked the sounds of other artists- to the contrary, his solo trip-hop works are a stylistic blend of sampled records, lo-fi synths and mish-mashings of other noises, while pairing up with Steffaloo has given him the opportunity to showcase his talents as working with a vocalist to create something more dynamic. There’s a-lot going on in Belong, however it’s all crafted to fit together so-well it manages to avoid sounding busy or ‘cluttered’ as can sometimes be the temptation when artists produce vast-dreamy glo-fi pieces.

Sleep ∞ Over – Romantic Streams by Chris

Following on from my recent posting trend of gorgeous dream-pop chicks I want to have babies with (see Steffaloo and Stumbleine); Stefanie Franciotti is the sole remaining member of Sleep ∞ Over, which was previously a trio. However this is a music blog and not a gossip-magazine, so I’m going to look past whatever it was that made former members Christa Palazzolo and Sarah Brown break away from the group and form their own duo Boy Friend (who, if you are interested; I’ve written about here).

Romantic Streams comes from the full length debut Forever, which is contains elements of equal-parts shoegaze and dream-pop… in-fact I could rant on forever using words like chillwave, glo-fi and noise-rock; but instead this time I’m going to let the music speak for itself for once.

I highly recommend you check out the album:

Chrome Sparks – Still Sleeping (feat. Steffaloo) by Chris

THE FIRST TRACK TO EARN A BRILLIANCE TAG THIS YEAR!

Chrome Sparks is a USA- based artist who puts out neat music which falls somewhere in the ‘electronic-pop’ area. A wonderfull collaboration featuring the vocal talents of LA-based Steffaloo brought us Still Sleeping sometime around October last year, and it’s a fun track all-round.

Despite a focus on lo-fi folk, Steffaloo‘s voice is accustomed to geting the electronic remix treatment- and it’s a matchmade in heaven when combined with Chrome Sparks‘ dreamy production work. Overall, the track is upbeat enough to happily sway to, but not quite enough to get you embarrassing yourself all sweaty on the dance floor- although I speak for myself; I’m sure after a few too many guava shots you could find hordes of tie-dye clad and glow-stick equipped ravers moving their hands and their butts in a bizarre motion that could be considered dancing along to this great track. Gang Gang Dance – Thru and Thru by Chris

Aside from having one of the coolest photos ever for the cover of their album Eye Contact, New York experimental/lo-fi electroclash outfit Gang Gang Dance recently stopped by my home city of Melbourne for a gig- and I’m ashamed to say I couldn’t make it 😦

Fans of Bjork, The Knife and perhaps even Animal Collective (especially those that have indulged in member Panda Bear‘s solo works) will find familiar-yet distinctly different sounds in Gang Gang Dance‘s work- across the whole Eye Contact record there’s a slight taste of Indian pop, African rhythms and even UK r&b, but only very subtly- the same way you get that odd metallic taste in your mouth before it rains.

For posting today I’ve picked the album’s closing track Thru and Thru. It’s very up-beat, what I can imagine Indian synth-pop would sound like if it was given a western re-hash. Quite an interesting listen, I must admit, it’s somewhat difficult to get into without the rest of the album to support it- but if you are a Bjork fan I’d say it’d be a little more accessible to you.

Also, is it just me or do they use the same samples as Infected Mushroom‘s Heavyweight at one point?
