Our friends ALTA seem to blow minds with every release.

Spazzkid – Getting to Know You by Chris

It’s been a year since Spazzkid released Desire. The album plays like Bibio soaked in chillwave, and while it’s a little different to what we normally post around here, its always good to treat your ears to some pop-ish music once and awhile.

Chet Faker – Melt feat. Kilo Kish by Chris

This is going to be all over the blogosphere but how could I resist. Local superstar Chet Faker (who skyrocketed to stardom with his amazing cover of Blackstreet’s No Diggity) teaming up with the totally dope Kilo Kish (check out K+ if you missed the boat on her).

I caught a bit of Chet Faker‘s set at Splendour in the Grass (major Aussie music festival) and his fan-base ranged from drunk teens to groovy middle-aged couples. A testament to the brilliant accessibility of his music.

One of my favourite local young Melbourne artists, Wintercoats released the soothing EP Heartful in April as a ‘name your price’ download via Bandcamp.

Wintercoats will be performing at the Yes Please 2nd Birthday Party happening in Melbourne on July 18 at The Worker’s Club with live sets in the band room from artists on the Yes Please artists I’lls, Fishing, Wintercoats, Guerre and The Townhouses. Plus DJ sets in the front bar from Oscar Key Sung, Andras Fox, Simon Winkler, Tim Shiel and Adam Christou.

Willow Beats – Alchemy EP by Chris

Fuck the Radio Collective home boys Willow Beats have been super busy, returning from a sold-out national tour to support the release of their second EP (below).

I had a quick exchange with Narayana earlier,

There are some tracks on the EP that I started a year ago, some that came together in the last few weeks!
We tried much more experimenting with this EP. There are a-lot more recorded samples and things like the water drops in Elemental (recorded in my bath tub). A-lot more attention was paid to the individual sounds as well. I wanted every small aspect to be as good as I could make it.
The tour was sold out which was incredible! It was amazing to see the amount of support we have! You don’t really realise from Facebook etc but when you see support in numbers its incredible.

Willow Beats – Alchemy preview by Chris

Fuck the Radio Collective artists Willow Beats have just dropped a preview video for their new single Alchemy to be released on the 11th of March.

If you live in Melbourne you can catch them live throughout March as they play through their Workers Club residency, with support from Allday and other FTR Collective artists ColourwavesAlta and Yosemite.

Sir Deckster – Rewind Me Up (Feat. Mari Posa) by Chris

I’ve had this one for a-while, but I have to share, because Brussels-based Sir Deckster is a really fantastic find. With a solid musical fusion of various elements- there’s a hint of The XX, perhaps a little SBTRKT and everything in-between. Rewind Me Up features some smooth jazzy vocals which mesh very well with the intricate percussion and fluttery ambiance.

Elizabeth Rose – Ready by Chris

Thought I’d hit you up with something slightly different today; Elizabeth Rose is doing an Aussie tour, and since she’s already established herself as a local favourite on the Summer festival circuit, the news has a-lot of people excited. If you are keen you might want to check out the article I wrote for Purple Sneakers.

The video for her January single titled Ready got released earlier this month. It has lots of colours and seizure-inducing effects- and although I’m not usually a fan of videos that look like someone has vomited rainbows onto film and animated it- the music makes the clip well worth it in this case. Her electronic-pop fusion kind of nods towards the stylings of La Roux, but without sounding like 100 kittens drowning in a pool of acid. Check it.

Sleep ∞ Over – Romantic Streams by Chris

Following on from my recent posting trend of gorgeous dream-pop chicks I want to have babies with (see Steffaloo and Stumbleine); Stefanie Franciotti is the sole remaining member of Sleep ∞ Over, which was previously a trio. However this is a music blog and not a gossip-magazine, so I’m going to look past whatever it was that made former members Christa Palazzolo and Sarah Brown break away from the group and form their own duo Boy Friend (who, if you are interested; I’ve written about here).

Romantic Streams comes from the full length debut Forever, which is contains elements of equal-parts shoegaze and dream-pop… in-fact I could rant on forever using words like chillwave, glo-fi and noise-rock; but instead this time I’m going to let the music speak for itself for once.

I highly recommend you check out the album:

Chrome Sparks – Still Sleeping (feat. Steffaloo) by Chris

THE FIRST TRACK TO EARN A BRILLIANCE TAG THIS YEAR!

Chrome Sparks is a USA- based artist who puts out neat music which falls somewhere in the ‘electronic-pop’ area. A wonderfull collaboration featuring the vocal talents of LA-based Steffaloo brought us Still Sleeping sometime around October last year, and it’s a fun track all-round.

Despite a focus on lo-fi folk, Steffaloo‘s voice is accustomed to geting the electronic remix treatment- and it’s a matchmade in heaven when combined with Chrome Sparks‘ dreamy production work. Overall, the track is upbeat enough to happily sway to, but not quite enough to get you embarrassing yourself all sweaty on the dance floor- although I speak for myself; I’m sure after a few too many guava shots you could find hordes of tie-dye clad and glow-stick equipped ravers moving their hands and their butts in a bizarre motion that could be considered dancing along to this great track. Check it:

Gang Gang Dance – Thru and Thru by Chris

Aside from having one of the coolest photos ever for the cover of their album Eye Contact, New York experimental/lo-fi electroclash outfit Gang Gang Dance recently stopped by my home city of Melbourne for a gig- and I’m ashamed to say I couldn’t make it 😦

Fans of Bjork, The Knife and perhaps even Animal Collective (especially those that have indulged in member Panda Bear‘s solo works) will find familiar-yet distinctly different sounds in Gang Gang Dance‘s work- across the whole Eye Contact record there’s a slight taste of Indian pop, African rhythms and even UK r&b, but only very subtly- the same way you get that odd metallic taste in your mouth before it rains.

For posting today I’ve picked the album’s closing track Thru and Thru. It’s very up-beat, what I can imagine Indian synth-pop would sound like if it was given a western re-hash. Quite an interesting listen, I must admit, it’s somewhat difficult to get into without the rest of the album to support it- but if you are a Bjork fan I’d say it’d be a little more accessible to you.

Also, is it just me or do they use the same samples as Infected Mushroom‘s Heavyweight at one point?

Sea Wolf – You’re a Wolf by Chris

I haven’t posted much indie/folk music on Fuck the Radio simply because I feel that it’s developed it’s own strongly established scene in its own right. Fans of the genre will most likely already be familiar with the more mainstream names like Bon Iver and Morissey (I don’t use the term ‘mainstream’ negatively here, unlike many hipsters that will abandon their favourite band once it’s Facebook page reaches over 1,000 likes in order to look ‘alternative’). Even the most indie-twee-of-twee such as Kimya Dawson (and her anti-folk duo The Moldy Peaches), Joanna Newsom and Antsy Pants enjoy their spot in the relatively ‘popular’ limelight (one only needs to listen to the soundtrack of the film Juno to discover this).

There was a time when I had a *whatever the latest iPod device was* chock-a-block full of indie punk-folk music. I’d spend weekends lying in bed listening to Noah and the Whale (I occasionally do still indulge in the odd listen on Five Years Time), My Little Pony, Laura Marling, Neutral Milk Hotel etc. This was the time that I learned to love music; when I discovered there was a world beyond the ubiquitous pop music that I never quite found accessible. Then came the whole indie-revolution, and suddenly everyone was trying to like the most edgy and obscure bands they could find.

Sea Wolf aren’t particularly edgy- The album Leaves in the River was released in 2007 and they play out much like a Death Cab for Cutie clone. As for obscurity, You’re a Wolf was in shows as popular as Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries… It even plays during a scene in Zombieland. But I think it deserves a more in-depth listen than being the backing track for a movie or television show can provide.

The melodic, dreamy mood shaped by the brilliant bowed strings and Church’s vocals fills your ears with a near euphoric indie-pop sound that has manage to retain it’s listening pleasure to me all these years since my indie-rock phase.

It may not be the most groundbreaking song you ever hear, but put simplistically, You’re a Wolf is a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Beastie Boys – Paul Revere by Chris

The Beastie Boys‘ debut hip-hop album License to Ill is my top 3 hip-hop albums of all time. I know this may seem a little out-of place on this blog, but Paul Revere is just too good for people to be missing out on. The whole reverse-beat it has going is fucking great, and the lyrics are entertaining to say the least… a spaghetti-western type story that reads like a play, each Beastie having his own role in the tale, here’s my favorite verse:

MCA:

“Now, I got the gun, you got the brew

You got two choices of what you can do

It’s not a tough decision as you can see

I can blow you away or you can ride with me”

Ad Rock:

“I said,

I’ll ride with you if you can get me to the border

The sheriff’s after me for what I did to his daughter,

I did it like this, I did it like that

I did it with a whiffleball bat”

The Beastie Boys started as a hardcore punk band, but switched to hip-hop around 1983, and in my books, any hip-hop before ’96 earns a green tick. But the ’86 (or was it early ’87?) Paul Revere  (much like the rest of License to Ill) is a track that could have been released yesterday and still be fresh. Take a listen and you’ll see what I mean:

El Ten Eleven – Hotcakes by Chris

El Ten Eleven consists of a drummer and a bass player with a shitload of effects pedals.

Hot Cakes is a track you can dance to, yet without being too overpowering in it’s delivery. Shoegaze at it’s best.

Husky Rescue – Nightless Night (Fink Remix) by Chris

A mellow blend of dub, melancholy and folk.  Vocals that sit somewhere between frail and simply beautiful, Fink’s remix of the Husky Rescue’s single is a vaguely sinister, yet comforting track.
