Everyone has bizzare rituals; whether it be conditioning thier hair before they shampoo, purposely wearing socks inside out- or something a little more involved, like sitting in the same seat at the same bar every Friday after work and ordering the same drink. We all have little things that we like to keep to ourselves- it’s what keeps us sane. For me, every Sunday night after I get home from the radio station, I pour myself a small glass of red wine, turn the TV onto the ‘classic movies’ channel (where they play all the old black-and white films), mute it, and listen to music.
Kwala‘s album Shabang may be the perfect soundtrack for these moments. As wine slowly stains my lips and the suave-looking detective in the movie lights up his cigar, Kwala‘s expansive pads and smooth down-tempo rhythms fill the full aural spectrum. Not demanding enough to be abrasive or distracting, yet far from being boring or repetitive- the best way to describe Kwala‘s music would be something like ‘post-trip-hop’. Excuse my ‘typical-music-blogger-making-up-meaningless-genres-to-avoid-actually-describing-the-music’, but being superfluous when it comes to these things does nothing justice. Plus I want to enjoy my wine.
The full album is available here for a pick-your-price download and it comes with my highest recommendation:
<edit: It seems to have disappeared, but there is still some great stuff up there>

yahnLOOKEpicard‘s name is as bizarre as the slimey bass-sound used in Bit Breaths. The only difference is that while I stress I’ve gotten the name wrong, we can all rest assured that the bass is just right.
Electronica when styled up in just the right way can sound almost ‘organic’, and Bit Breaths is as teeming with life as the swampy marsh I picture when I listen to it (yes it’s one of those posts where I say weird shit that makes no sense).
At the end of the day, yahnLOOKEpicard is absolutely on-point in crafting neat glitch-hop beats, and Bit Breaths is a perfect example of his aptitude.

I’m back with a ripper of a sunburn.
The end of January is nearing- time really flies! It’s been about a year since Cloud of Sounds posted this WIP version of Glitch 2 on Soundcloud. A neat 2-step style chip-tune… (chip-step?) Glitch 2 combines simple basslines with quick-moving arpeggios to create a vintage-video-game-meets-dubstep style sound.

Another Fuck the Radio mixtape!
Fuck Melody features some artists you’ve already seen on this blog, and some you haven’t- it plays out like a DJ set, however the tracks are all split into individual files to make listening a breeze. Also included are links to all the artists featured.
I guarantee you’ll love it- or your money back it’s free! You literally have NOTHING to lose.

Sound Toned‘s works are all unique examples of audio-art rather than traditionalist ‘music’. Also found on his Soundcloud page are a unique variety of spoken-word soundscapes and world-music.
Dark Waters is a space-y electronic piece, with beautiful sounds and tight percussive sounds that go against the normal conventions of ‘ambient’, while not quite crossing over into the miasma of ‘experimental’.

Nowan is a Sweedish producer who has been putting out some beautiful IDM tracks. He’s been picked up by Screwloose Records (who sign dubstep badmen KOAN Sound and Tim Ismag) to release a debut EP early next year.
This track Quantum Reality was released as part of Screwloose’s free Christmas EP which you can find here. It’s fundamentally an IDM track, but now that ‘dubstep’ is such a blog-friendly genre label, I suppose it would be fair to call it that as well. There is a deep sub-bass throughout that grounds the whole track, leaving the beautiful synths and pads to create an expansive atmosphere throughout. This is not a track for laptop speakers or ipod headphones. This is something to play though a proper stereo-system and really enjoy. The glitchy effects and drums are used to perfect effect- somethimes it can be too tempting for artists to over-use stuttering effects and sliced samples in IDM, leaving the track sounding messy; but Nowan has utilised them perfectly.

So I’ve already blogged about UK-based electronic beat-maker Mute Speaker, but Zeros & Ones just shuffled on my iTunes and I’m in-love. Grab the album Smart Bomb off of his bandcamp page– you will not regret it.

Apologies for the slack posting, I was recovering from my Dubcage launch hangover. As a shameless publicity stunt, every 10 likes we got at http://www.facebook.com/dubcage resulted in us doing a shot of liquor on air… and let me tell you, 22 shots of bourbon was never meant to be consumed by any human. You can catch Dubcage at 10pm Melbourne time Sunday nights at dubcage.com or on 88.3 Southern FM.
Speaking of Melbourne, our artist Thrupence also hails from this part of the world. I’m really digging his soothing electronica, in-between chillwave and ambient with a romantic twist, Thrupence writes nothing on his Soundcloud page description other than I try to make beautiful things – an accomplishment well earned I think. I’d love to post all of his music, but I’ll give you his latest track and leave the link to his Soundcloud for you to explore.

It seems as though I have recently discovered this amazing nexus of quality music in a place called the Netherlands. We could speculate why Fabled Enemies, Sick Lebowski and today’s post Julien Mier all come from the same country- ooorrr we could listen to the beautiful music they create without question.
As It Is is unique- not quite adhering soley into the genres of glitch or IDM.. is fits within the ever-growing and unspecific labelling of ‘electronica’. Don’t let this put you off- to the contrary; the sounds are delightfully familiar and accessible, without being boring and ubiquitous.

Anti-Pop Consortium‘s alternative hip-hop sound is much underrated, especially at a time where artists such as Tyler the Creator and The Neptunes thrive. That said, I’m not making a direct comparison between the groups. Four Tet‘s remix of Volcano is a perfect addition to the Ninja Tune XX label’s catalog, whereas it may look a tad out of place on something like Interscope.
The tune is the prefect balance of lo-fi without sounding messy. The melodic arpeggiated synths remind me of something that you’d hear from Jarre or Vangelis, but that’s probably just me. The rap vocals are tight and flow well over the top, as you can expect from a group as reputable as the Anti-Pop Consortium, who have been doing their thing since the late 90s (not counting a 5-year hiatus from 2002-2007). Check it out:

My laptop blew up so I’ve been unable to post anything until I get everything back in order… Luckily I backed up everything literally by complete chance a mere 2 days before it happened, so I lost nothing important. Just means my blogging (and my own music production) has been on hold (and will remain so until I get a new laptop).
I can however recommend this indie label I discovered putting out some neat downtempo/house/electronica stuff. I highly recommend you check some of their stuff out.

So Warp Records are looking to have quite a big release on their hands with Rustie‘s Glass Swords coming out on the 10th.
Artists Skream, Joker, Bibio and many more have already given it praise, and as Rustie‘s twitter following sky-rocketing to over 5,000 about 18 hours ago, you can watch the hype growing.
Ultra Thizz was given a special limited edition 12-inch vinyl release ahead of the album, with another track Dreamzz which is only available on the vinyl.
Here’s Ultra Thizz for your regular radio-fuckery:
Now that Glass Swords is out you can find it here:

Signed to Pretty Lights’ own record label, it’s not really a surprise that if you are a fan of the former, Grammatik will suit your tastes perfectly. Chilled trip-hop beats with funky jazz vocal samples spicing things up in Is It Over is something reminiscent of Pretty Lights’ tracks such as Finally Moving or the previously posted Something’s Wrong.
Definatley worth a listen if you love Pretty Lights or are completely new to the style- either way, Grammatik is still great, and you can support him by downloading his album (FOR FREE) off of the Pretty Lights Music Record Label site.
Ofcourse you can try him out first with a download from here 😀
