Cult Cosmos’ latest release is an assortment of sounds and genres ranging from disco to future-beat to straight up IDM-like breaks. It really puts the emphasis on the mix in mixtape. We could also comment on the appropriate titling too- with emphasis on the meta in METAMUSIC but that would just be, woah, so meta.
Highlights include tracks 7 & 8- Nervous and Tension, well titled to fit next each-other, despite one sounding like something you could play alongside one of FlyLo’s earlier works, while the other sounding like it belongs as the backing track for a segment on Soul Train… no… really, try it yourself:
Largely sample-based, some tracks swell through synths while others chop though sounds from all over the place. Peep it if you haven’t already above.

It’s been a year since Spazzkid released Desire. The album plays like Bibio soaked in chillwave, and while it’s a little different to what we normally post around here, its always good to treat your ears to some pop-ish music once and awhile.

So very tempted to make this blog all about the dope shit coming out of Melbourne, there’d be more than enough to post about.
Ex-Bristol turned Melbourne local Titus 12 had his Karnak EP unleashed by Uncomfortable Beats just before our long weekend. Filled with both familiar sounds and what appear to be some quirky field recordings, the production behind Karnak is a tight mix of dub and future beat.

Fuck the Radio Collective picked up Melbourne’s FLOW around 9 months ago after peeping an amazing live set. His first album has finally hit the Internet for your listening pleasure. If described in one word? I’d use something like ‘trippy’. Melbourne is surely delivering on the electronic beat goodness lately.

Duke Westlake’s Re. Turn is an impressive 30 tracks large. Ranging from chillout to electronica to straight up hip-hop, this album contains an impressive variety of different sounds and samples, worth hitting play and kicking back to.

One of my favourite local young Melbourne artists, Wintercoats released the soothing EP Heartful in April as a ‘name your price’ download via Bandcamp.
Wintercoats will be performing at the Yes Please 2nd Birthday Party happening in Melbourne on July 18 at The Worker’s Club with live sets in the band room from artists on the Yes Please artists I’lls, Fishing, Wintercoats, Guerre and The Townhouses. Plus DJ sets in the front bar from Oscar Key Sung, Andras Fox, Simon Winkler, Tim Shiel and Adam Christou.

Fuck the Radio Collective home boys Willow Beats have been super busy, returning from a sold-out national tour to support the release of their second EP (below).
I had a quick exchange with Narayana earlier,
There are some tracks on the EP that I started a year ago, some that came together in the last few weeks!
We tried much more experimenting with this EP. There are a-lot more recorded samples and things like the water drops in Elemental (recorded in my bath tub). A-lot more attention was paid to the individual sounds as well. I wanted every small aspect to be as good as I could make it.
The tour was sold out which was incredible! It was amazing to see the amount of support we have! You don’t really realise from Facebook etc but when you see support in numbers its incredible.

Our friends at Condensed Milk have released an instant-classic. This is a must-have compilation of amazing future soul and beat-music.
CDMK‘s Dusty Milk Crate compilations have being important chapters in the book of the contemporary underground beat scene around the world since the first volume’s debut last year. This volume boasts an impressive line-up of producers from all-around the world including (to name only a very few) Vanilla, Roughsoul, Oisima, Flash Forest, Silent Jay, M-Phazes, Amin PaYnE and many, many more.

The gap between producers and musicians is a precarious one, especially when it comes to playing live. Squarehead played at Fuck the Radio‘s opening night just over a week ago and put on an amazing show.
Performing songs live as a trio, complete with bass guitar and 50 different effects pedals- if you have the chance, Squarehead are not an act you want to miss if you love music (and, if you read this blog- I assume you do).
Raindrops is a beautifully composed track with a multitude of evolving bits and pieces that in the right atmosphere just fill the room and take you in for a musical candlelit journey over forests and deserts on the back of a magical flying flamingo. The rest of the free album shares a similar feeling, only perhaps with different flying magical animals. It’s something I can’t really describe without sounding like a maniac, so don’t just take my word for it- grab the album, and catch them live in Melbourne on the 21st (link below)… I’ll be there with my flamingo.

Cascade Records has overtaken Warp and Ninja Tune for me when it comes to exciting new releases; the Paris-based label is constantly supporting underground gold- and their latest release with Resistant Mindz is no exception.
A great compilation with some fantastic post-hip-hop/trip-hop etc. sounds from a plethora of talented artists, including FTR faves Broke, Repeat Pattern and Ackryte (above), there’s some real special creativity running through the grooves of this record, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

As promised, Amable‘s The Bundle was released today and it’s a neat collection of various experimental trip-hop tunes produced by the Florida-based beat-maker that have appeared all over the net these past few years.
A dynamic compilation of rarities, we’ll be catching up with Amable later in the week for a chat, so make sure you subscribe to the blog and check out the album, released by the quasi-avant-garde label Geweih Ritual Documents here:

Repeat Pattern (previously posted here) has released a new digital album with one of my favourite indie labels, Cascade Records. The album is available for a name-your-price download on http://cascaderecords.bandcamp.com/album/08-09
It’s a neat acid-jazz cross trip-hop record, I highly recommend you go grab it… and while your at it, why not support the artist with a few bucks?
PS: I’ll be posting another mixtape for new years, so stay tuned for Jan 1st
