I’m not normally a trance fan, but a friend leant me Above & Beyond‘s Group Therapy and I’m actually digging it. a nice mix of chilled electronica and uplifting trance, give the opening track Filmic a listen and see if you can resist trying out the rest of the album.

James Blake – Air and Lack Thereof by Chris

Why has it taken me so long to post this amazing track? It earns my FUCK THE RADIO Brillance label.

Halfway between dubstep and chillout ambient music, this builds and releases musical tension with pure artistry. Are real pleasure to sit in the dark and simply listen. My one criticism is that it only lasts 4 minutes when I would gladly listen for 15.

Also a good hangover cure.

Sushleela Radman – Love Lies (Hit by a Rock remix) by Chris

Some classic Dubstep today, deep bass- no laptop speakers allowed.

Hit By A Rock‘s dubstep remix of Shushleela Radman‘s Love Lies is a prime example of the 2007/2008 era dubstep that was almost a different genre entirely to the filthy tracks we have today. Worth a listen to fans of the genre looking for a history lesson, or to those who feel alienated by the heavy modern dubstep sound.

Franz Schubert – Ellens dritter Gesang (Ave Maria) by Chris

Something a little different for you this time. We have the famous piece Ellens dritter Gesang, more widley known as Ave Maria by Franz Schubert. This performance of the piece is done sung not by a woman but a talented young boy named Daniel Perret. I spent a good hour today listening to different versions and this one comes from an unlikely location- a video game soundtrack.

Enjoy the haunting harp arpeggios, the angelic vocals, the opera goodness.

Robo Booty fronts off the BRILLIANT slurp and giggle album from Opiuo. A really funky booming start to one of the funkiest, sexiest most satisfying albums I have listened to in awhile.

I was especially pleased to learn that Opiuo hails from my home city of Melbourne, Australia. His debut album Slurp and Giggle is an amazing blend of glitch, hip hop and straight up pure funky beats. I highly recommend you get your hands on his album- and anything else he releases.

Honey in the Heart begins as a pretty fluttering of synths and progresses into a happy funky electronica piece.

The whole album is a gem, give this song a try though, you won’t regret it:

I had the pleasure of catching Naminé playing a set at one of my favorite bars recently. The live performance is just as amazing as the recorded versions- a feat not easy with this type of music, especially as a solo artist. The parts played on a keyboard and looped through a pedal board. Mellowing vocals and hugley atmospheric synth sounds hold you in the moment throughout the whole EP. A great listen.

So Beyonce just released her new song called Run the World (Girls) and it is TERRIBLE.

Diplo & Switch re-using thier old Pon de Floor beat (seriously guys, I’ve heard you use it with La Roux, Afrojack and Major Lazer already, time to come up with something original!)

John Powell – The Next Adventure by Chris

The problem with movie music is that… well… quite frankly it’s ‘typecast’.

Modern composers such as John Powell and Jesper Kyd are hidden behind a curtain, when they could be basking in well-deserved glory with the likes of Dennis DeSantis.

Just listen to this track from Mr. and Mrs. Smith… try to push out the image of Brad and Angelina prancing around in an unflattering ‘action-packed romantic comedy’… YUCK.

Luckily the music is much more sophisticated, Powell’s use of modern percussion styles mixed with more traditional orchestral scoring is an amazing musical juxtaposition that fits oh so nicely. Suspended cymbal builds layered into percussion patterns are reminiscent of modern electronica, while the strings, flutes and horns all give an amazing emotional body to the song.

John Powell – The Next Adventure

Also, may I add, I had a primary school teacher named John Powell, and he was a complete asshole. fuck you John.

Shlohmo – Spoons by Chris

Shlohmo is a legend, taking the art of a ‘dubstep drop’ to a whole new level. It’s sophisticated, beyond the cliche “GET THE FUCK OUTTA HEREEE WUB WUB WUB WOBBBBB WOBBBB” style filth that makes your body contort and bang around like something out of the exorcist on the dance-floor, Spoons is dubstep for your brain, allow the various lobes to bob around to the beat while your cerebellum chills with the groove. There’s something almost acidic about it, like an acid-meets-hip-hop hybrid, the sounds coming out of the Wu Tang Clan’s mouths if Aphex Twin and Skream were spit-roasting them rhythmically one at a time.

Before this gets any more sexually charged and disturbing, I think you should give Spoons a listen…
