Oliver Tank’s Dreams by Chris

A few posts back I posted Sydney-based chillwave artist Oliver Tank.

His debut EP Dreams is out as a digital download on bandcamp and iTunes, however there is a large push to get the release pressed onto vinyl. This is very expensive and is being funded by pre-orders of the album itself- so if you’d like to support amazing hard-working musicians and get a physical copy of the vinyl, I urge you to check out:

http://www.pozible.com.au/index.php/archive/index/4474/

Oliver Tank has been on the up and up lately, getting his music featured in this very powerful (and popular) gay-rights video by Get Up! brought his music to a-lot more people.

Vinyl has been deemed ‘old-fashioned’ by many (any they are quite right), in-fact, my father was surprised they still release new things on vinyl. The truth is, there’s something magical about vinyl that a CD or MP3 file lacks- that is, that the grooves in the wax literally are  the physical manifestation of the music. It’s the closest thing we have to capturing sound into something you can hold in your hands. There are still Djs that work using vinyl exclusively, and there are many more (myself included… albeit my collection is pathetic) that collect their favourite songs/artists in vinyl records. They are rarities that you often cannot find anywhere else. In this case with Oliver Tank you can not only be involved in helping create the vinyl, but be an owner of one of the only 300 copies.

Oudies – Jijopers by Chris

Ok, after countless hours of Skyrim (I play for the music, I swear) I’m back to posting.

Oudies is from Chile, he produces some groovy hip-hop instrumentals with lots of interesting samples- from recordings of the ocean to old jazz records. I’m really digging his stuff at the moment.

This track Jijopers has one of those cool slap-rattle things which name escapes me at the moment punctuating the broken-beat that jangles along with some simplistically pretty synths. It’s a short one too, so if you are left wanting more- check out his soundcloud or his free album on bandcamp.

Gang Gang Dance – Thru and Thru by Chris

Aside from having one of the coolest photos ever for the cover of their album Eye Contact, New York experimental/lo-fi electroclash outfit Gang Gang Dance recently stopped by my home city of Melbourne for a gig- and I’m ashamed to say I couldn’t make it 😦

Fans of Bjork, The Knife and perhaps even Animal Collective (especially those that have indulged in member Panda Bear‘s solo works) will find familiar-yet distinctly different sounds in Gang Gang Dance‘s work- across the whole Eye Contact record there’s a slight taste of Indian pop, African rhythms and even UK r&b, but only very subtly- the same way you get that odd metallic taste in your mouth before it rains.

For posting today I’ve picked the album’s closing track Thru and Thru. It’s very up-beat, what I can imagine Indian synth-pop would sound like if it was given a western re-hash. Quite an interesting listen, I must admit, it’s somewhat difficult to get into without the rest of the album to support it- but if you are a Bjork fan I’d say it’d be a little more accessible to you.

Also, is it just me or do they use the same samples as Infected Mushroom‘s Heavyweight at one point?

Bonobo – Noctuary by Chris

A noctuary is like a diary that you keep only about what happens at night. A ‘night journal’ of sorts. I wonder if Bonobo created this amazing trip-hop piece, with the title Noctuary in-mind.

The track has it’s own personality, like that of a noir film set in Tokyo… Bonobo‘s use of mysterious jazzy piano embellishments and sexy cymbal grooves makes Noctuary a real pleasurable listen.

Of-course, this can be expected from one of Ninja Tune‘s most highly respected artists… and with 191,000+ Facebook fans, a high quality track is no great surprise. Definitely worth adding his music to your collection…

Thrupence – White Kite by Chris

Apologies for the slack posting, I was recovering from my Dubcage launch hangover. As a shameless publicity stunt, every 10 likes we got at http://www.facebook.com/dubcage resulted in us doing a shot of liquor on air… and let me tell you, 22 shots of bourbon was never meant to be consumed by any human. You can catch Dubcage at 10pm Melbourne time Sunday nights at dubcage.com or on 88.3 Southern FM.

Speaking of Melbourne, our artist Thrupence also hails from this part of the world. I’m really digging his soothing electronica, in-between chillwave and ambient with a romantic twist, Thrupence writes nothing on his Soundcloud page description other than I try to make beautiful things – an accomplishment well earned I think. I’d love to post all of his music, but I’ll give you his latest track and leave the link to his Soundcloud for you to explore.

Ephk – You Will Never Disappear (Mr. Blonde remix) by Chris

So the past week or so I’ve been hard at work preparing for the launch of two new radio shows on 88.3 Southern FM (A Melbourne radio station). One is a monthly Fuck the Radio Radio Show which will obviously serve as a compliment to this blog, and will also be released as a Soundcloud podcast- so stay tuned for that!

The second is a weekly Dubstep show called Dubcage. Focusing primarily on filthy dubstep/drum and bass/drumstep/grime/moombahcore/trash and whatever other heavy bass music is out there. Check it out here.

Today I’m posting an underground chillstep remix by Mr. Blonde of a track called You Will Never Disapear. It’s not the kind of filthy shit you’ll hear if you listen to the Dubcage radio show, but I think it’s a happy compromise for this blog’s style.

Deep and melodic, You Will Never Disappear is a somewhat lounge-y style ambient bass track with some pretty piano flutterings. A very well produced track.

Caribou – Village by Chris

So the first thing I posted on this blog was Rachel’s with Wouldn’t Live Anywhere Else (read the post here) which is an abstract-sound scape-meets-experimental-chamber-music piece. Caribou has posted a more raw soundscape on Soundcloud, and I’m a real sucker for the genre so I thought I’d share it.

I understand a-lot of people can’t really get into the idea of ‘found sound’ pieces; in-fact awhile ago I quoted Edgar Varèse in saying “Music is organised sound”, and Village is a track that challenges this idea to it’s very core.

Simply put, Village is a recording of two or three men having a causal conversation about text messaging in what sounds like a restaurant- but I think there’s a somewhat romanticised idea behind recording and sharing the sounds of civilization. I think John Cage put it best when he was talking about his composition 4’33” (an infamous contemporary peice which consisted of nothing but 4’33” of silence, which I’ve linked here)

There’s no such thing as silence. What they thought was silence, because they didn’t know how to listen, was full of accidental sounds.

While Cage‘s 4’33” is very much about experiencing the present moment that the piece is being performed, Caribou‘s Village presents a twist to the idea, which gives you the opportunity to experience a different setting, on the other side of the planet. Upon each listen your imagination adds more and more to the piece, at first I was interested in the conversation that can be heard, then the surrounding environment- the cars, the clanging of cutlery, the subtle noises of distant chirping birds.

Village is a minute-long moment captured forever through sound, bottled up in an mp3 file and able to be revisited again and again.

Insun – Positive Limitation by Chris

Positive Limitation is a track I found hidden away in my ever-growing maze of music folders with no hint as to how I acquired it.

All I know is that it’s credited to ‘Insun‘. This may or may not be the same Insun as this Sweedish trance producer who has similar stylistic attributes in his music; but he doesn’t seem to have a track named Positive Limitation available… which further deepens the mystery of how it ended up in my possession.

Regardless; if you are into looming ambient music- check out Positive Limitation– a track which you might not be able to find anywhere else!

Gsstoak – Goleg by Chris

Believe it or not, I’m actually an avid radio listener. After a long day at work (selling Eminem CDs to pre-teen girls at a music store) I was delighted to tune into a glo-fi/shoegaze show on a community station while driving home. Gsstoak‘s Goleg captivated me to the point where I sat in my driveway, refusing to get out of the car until the track had finished.

Luckily I carry a notebook around everywhere I go (which girls tell me is ‘creepy’, but I wouldn’t expect them to understand considering most of the girls I meet at bars are so superficial they don’t have anything in their life worthy of writing down) and I was able to scrawl down Gsstoak‘s name as the radio DJ announced the track ID (a challenge in its own right considering the bizarre spelling).

Goleg reminds me of Animal Collective, it’s got that psych-pop/electronic-folk sound. On the first listen, it brought a smile to my face- and reminded me of the pleasures of finding new music (especially after listening to Kylie Minogue’s live album about 50 times through at the music shop). I feel as if it’s like a good book that I don’t want to ruin for you by describing- so just skip to the download!

Also worth mentioning is his bandcamp page where he has an entire album called Mt. Internet available for free! The album as a whole is rich with a lo-fi electronic folk sound which is really quite unique.

Beirut – My Night With The Prostitute From Marseille by Chris

Beirut- much like previously posted Sea Wolf are a band I liked when I was 14/15. I just recently revisited My Night With The Prostitute From Marseille remembering it’s warm electronic sounds were somewhat comforting during the more awkward moments of puberty.

Not to make it sound like I’m still awkwardly waddling my way towards masculinity (that journey ceased once and for all when this crazy shit put hair on my chest). My Night captures the dreamy escapist feeling I craved as a 14/15 year old- and to an extent still do.

Julien Mier – As It Is by Chris

It seems as though I have recently discovered this amazing nexus of quality music in a place called the Netherlands. We could speculate why Fabled Enemies, Sick Lebowski and today’s post Julien Mier all come from the same country- ooorrr we could listen to the beautiful music they create without question.

As It Is is unique- not quite adhering soley into the genres of glitch or IDM.. is fits within the ever-growing and unspecific labelling of ‘electronica’. Don’t let this put you off- to the contrary; the sounds are delightfully familiar and accessible, without being boring and ubiquitous.

All the way from Iceland we have Sesar with a melodic track called Sól – which google translate tells me means Solar in Icelandic; fitting perhaps that it complements the previous few space-themed tracks I’ve posted.

It’s a melodic progressive techno track with some vocals that remind me of uplifting trance. Check it out if you enjoyed 06R – AIR. It’s also got a neat guitar section towards the end.

Kuhn has been getting some attention for his release Slime Beach, played by XFM dj Mary Anne Hobbs last month. This release with Astro Nautico is more a of a trip-hoppy acid-jazzstep style track which is quite intriguing.
