B Flat – With You by Chris

The San Fransico bay area is a place teeming with creative aural gems, somewhere I’d really love to visit again to go for a good musical dig. A shining example is this fresh tune from B Flat titled With You released as a single by Soulection.

Danceable and upbeat, yet still maintaining an atmospheric vibe- With You is described by B Flat as being a song about a girl.

It was somewhat of a gloomy day at the beach, but the sun was still out.

I think that quote encapsulates the tone of the track quite well. While certainly not deep and moody, With You avoids sounding bright and twee- check out the free download bellow:

Mattron – Ea$y by Chris

Mattron‘s personal tape is the best dollar I’ve spent all year.

Wonderfully crafted trip-hop in its abundance, Pants Morgan Money Tape is set to make my iTunes’ ‘top played’ list any-time now… Warm and relaxing, the 14 tracks all sit perfectly in the middle section of the imaginary ‘musically stimulating’ and ‘easy listening’ Venn diagram.

Fans of hip-hop will appreciate the meticulous effort put into crafting these beats out of various samples, ranging from odd-ball synth sounds to contemporary jazz snippets- Mattron makes creating great instrumental hip-hop seem Ea$y.

Amable – Spooky Bounce by Chris

Amable‘s Spooky Bounce is indeed spooky… and bouncy! (the epitome of music journalism right there).

The spookiness is in the subtleties, a sampled piano loop- complete with crisp vinyl pops and crackles- oh the joys of trip-hop!

Meanwhile a grimey saw bassline teams up with an exceptionally neat percussive drum-part to keep the track moving along. It’s as if a ghetto gang of werewolves and zombies (complete with low-riding pants and excessive amounts of dollar-sign gold necklaces) are strutting their stuff down the graveyard main-street at midnight, boom-box on shoulder, blasting this spooky trip-hop tune.

Yahn Looke Picard – Bit Breaths by Chris

yahnLOOKEpicard‘s name is as bizarre as the slimey bass-sound used in Bit Breaths. The only difference is that while I stress I’ve gotten the name wrong, we can all rest assured that the bass is just right.

Electronica when styled up in just the right way can sound almost ‘organic’, and Bit Breaths is as teeming with life as the swampy marsh I picture when I listen to it (yes it’s one of those posts where I say weird shit that makes no sense).

At the end of the day, yahnLOOKEpicard is absolutely on-point in crafting neat glitch-hop beats, and Bit Breaths is a perfect example of his aptitude.

Tal Ronen – Deep Thinking by Chris

Tal Ronen‘s expressive guitar solo is accompanied by a smooth synth pad and deep kick drum to create the looming chillout piece Deep Thinking. When the drum kit rhythm kicks in, you are treated to 30 seconds of classical rock goodness- until it dissipates back into nothing. A great piece of relaxing work that yearns to last a little longer.

Gorilla Junk – Unknown Voyage So Far by Chris

The sounds of Gorilla Junk are a mish-mash of familiar instrumentation and unique creativity, (I could swear there is a paper-rustling sample in Unkown Voyage So Far) something admirable and risky- yet pulled off very well in this case.

The melodic rock influence in Unkown Voyage is prevalent- there’s even some distorted backing guitar (something we don’t hear much of on FTR), award for most unique sound however goes to the use of the aussie didgeridoo during the track’s second half which serves as an interesting backing to a loud jazzy bass. Give it a listen!

Cloud of Sounds – Glitch 2 by Chris

I’m back with a ripper of a sunburn.

The end of January is nearing- time really flies! It’s been about a year since Cloud of Sounds posted this WIP version of Glitch 2 on Soundcloud. A neat 2-step style chip-tune… (chip-step?) Glitch 2 combines simple basslines with quick-moving arpeggios to create a vintage-video-game-meets-dubstep style sound.

Censorship and Blogging by Chris

Last night, popular Melbourne-based dubstep music blog Daftwho? had it’s Mediafire account deleted in the wake of the US Government’s recent over-zealous crusade against online piracy, loosing 2,300+ songs.

Many of these songs were promotional copies that the artists had sent to Daftwho? with the hopes that their music would be promoted to a wide audience of potential fans. The blog was very successful for this purpose, with many underground and unheard-of artists gaining fans out of those who had downloaded their music off the blog for free.

As you probably know, Fuck the Radio also utilizes Mediafire to distribute its content and operates under a very similar posting model.  Copyrighted tracks have been posted on FTR in the past; however due to several DMCA clashes and several artists contacting me with requests for removal- I haven’t operated with that method for quite some time, instead opting to only promote artists who are already granting free promotional downloads, with a special focus on those who deserve more attention than they are getting for their creation.

Artists celebrate blogs such as Daftwho? and Fuck the Radio for sharing their creations, while the ‘content-mafia’ such as the RIAA cling to obsolete business models which primarily serve the industry’s business side rather than independent and highly talented artists. Recent lobbying of the government by these companies has resulted in legislation such as Stop Online Priacy Act (SOPA), Protect-IP Act (PIPA) (which we’ve all heard so much about) and the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) which threatens our civil liberties, freedom of speech, net neutrality, right to online privacy and damages creative freedom for artists.

Support independent record labels, support independent artists, support independent blogs and music.

Ogdah – Mood Swinging by Chris

Ogdah‘s groovy acid-jazz price Mood Swinging is so cool!

The drums are glitched to perfection- it can be very easy for over-zealous producers to overdo the effects but Ogdah utilizes his stutters and gates with rhythmic musicality. The samples are awesome (especially the one that opens the track), and the acid-jazz feel really grounds the track into something that is pleasing to listen to.

Also, it’s more music from the Netherlands!? WHAT IS UP WITH THAT PLACE?

Knobsticker – Upside Down by Chris

:O Another amazing group from the Netherlands! What do they put in the water there?! < Insert compulsory Netherlands marijuana joke here>.

Simply put, Knobsticker‘s Upside Down is deliciously funky- the drums are set in perfect balance between ‘cheesy 80s drum machine’ and ‘sexy  disco music’ while the synths are filtered to perfection, guaranteed to make your eardrums feel all groovy. Honestly, I feel like my ears are having the best party- complete with disco ball, multi-coloured light up floor and spiked punchbowl. Also, something about talk-box vocals makes me want to grow an afro and have sex… I was going to backspace that last sentence but I think I’ll leave it.

Comfortably fitting in a neat musical area between Daft Punk and synth-pop groups such as Rat vs Possum– treat your ears with a special free download of one of the tracks off their new album:

Somepling – flavaMemo by Chris

French Trip-Hopper Somepling released his free EP Properly Packed for free on Wednesday and I’ve finally gotten the chance to give it a proper listen through.

Fans of DJ Shadow and other alternative hip-hop beats producers will appreciate the overall soul of Somepling‘s work; the magic that can be created on an Akai MPC2000 is unreal when put into the correct music junkie’s hands. It is no wonder Somepling has garnered support from so many artists and labels.

Properly Packed is a collection of tracks that have been given away for free on his Soundcloud here and there, packed into one neat package. You can give the full album a download off of his Bandcamp page, where the option is to donate a measly $5 or just grab it for free off the provided mediafire link.

Sound Toned – Dark Waters by Chris

Sound Toned‘s works are all unique examples of audio-art rather than traditionalist ‘music’. Also found on his Soundcloud page are a unique variety of spoken-word soundscapes and world-music.

Dark Waters is a space-y electronic piece, with beautiful sounds and tight percussive sounds that go against the normal conventions of ‘ambient’, while not quite crossing over into the miasma of ‘experimental’.

Mononome – Enthusiasms (Couldn’t Ask For Anything More) by Chris

Mononome is a cut-and-paste style beatstrumental composer from Greece. His Dream Sequence EP was released on the first of December last year and I’ve been patiently waiting for a chance to post it since.

The track Enthusiasms (Couldn’t Ask For Anything More) is funky while at the same time mellow. A neat acid-jazz track to listen to when you go to one of those groovy bars where none of the chairs match and the graffiti on the bathroom wall is both witty and legible (although that is very specific… you can listen to the track pretty much anywhere). The whole EP is available for free off of his bandcamp page, check it out.
