A delightful trip-hop/future-beat style track from Denmark’s JONGPADAWAN. I’m not sure I’ve ever posted a Danish artist on FTR before, however if Afternoon Croissant is any indication of the quality of music coming from the Danes- I’ll be looking there more often.
A nice mix of smooth jazz and deep percussive elements, heavy compression is any trip-hopper’s friend, and JONGPADAWAN has executed his production techniques very well. The track avoids being a tedious sample loop by gradually switching up the beats, switching in and out different instrumental elements (a smooth tenor sax dips in and out as the beat goes on) and a suave French vocal sample keeps things sexy.
A debut EP is on the horizon with Greased Up Records announcing their first public EP release will be with him- release date TBA. Until then, enjoy Afternoon Croissant.

Everyone has bizzare rituals; whether it be conditioning thier hair before they shampoo, purposely wearing socks inside out- or something a little more involved, like sitting in the same seat at the same bar every Friday after work and ordering the same drink. We all have little things that we like to keep to ourselves- it’s what keeps us sane. For me, every Sunday night after I get home from the radio station, I pour myself a small glass of red wine, turn the TV onto the ‘classic movies’ channel (where they play all the old black-and white films), mute it, and listen to music.
Kwala‘s album Shabang may be the perfect soundtrack for these moments. As wine slowly stains my lips and the suave-looking detective in the movie lights up his cigar, Kwala‘s expansive pads and smooth down-tempo rhythms fill the full aural spectrum. Not demanding enough to be abrasive or distracting, yet far from being boring or repetitive- the best way to describe Kwala‘s music would be something like ‘post-trip-hop’. Excuse my ‘typical-music-blogger-making-up-meaningless-genres-to-avoid-actually-describing-the-music’, but being superfluous when it comes to these things does nothing justice. Plus I want to enjoy my wine.

This weekend I’m going to hit you up with another video (perhaps I’ll do this regularly from now on):
The main focus is on the first minute or so- James Blake fans will get tingles. Funnily enough, it was James Blake‘s father who produced Where to Turn, released back in November ’06 before James Blake heavily re-worked it into the minimalist-electronica piece that it is now The Wilhelm Scream. Give the original a listen and see what you think- I must admit progressive rock is not usually my thing, and James Blake did such a magnificent job capturing the mournful emotion behind the lyrics in his version; but I’m a real sucker for talking about samples and the whole father/son thing makes for a neat story.
Of-course, if you don’t know what I’m talking about, you simply must check out James Blake‘s The Whilhelm Scream which I coincidently included on this mixtape.

Following on from my recent posting trend of gorgeous dream-pop chicks I want to have babies with (see Steffaloo and Stumbleine); Stefanie Franciotti is the sole remaining member of Sleep ∞ Over, which was previously a trio. However this is a music blog and not a gossip-magazine, so I’m going to look past whatever it was that made former members Christa Palazzolo and Sarah Brown break away from the group and form their own duo Boy Friend (who, if you are interested; I’ve written about here).
Romantic Streams comes from the full length debut Forever, which is contains elements of equal-parts shoegaze and dream-pop… in-fact I could rant on forever using words like chillwave, glo-fi and noise-rock; but instead this time I’m going to let the music speak for itself for once.

Reminiscent of Oliver Tank, Wintercoats and even Steffaloo, the Bristol-based glo-fi artist Stumbleine is consistently superb, and with the recent release of a new album off of bandcamp, now is as good a time as ever to post the relaxing ambient chillwave peice Bloom released a little over a year ago within the pick-your price All For Your Smile.

Sonic Youth‘s Thurston Moore once said “I only listen to cassettes”, and I cannot really claim to have the same level of dedication and indie cred… But I do remember listening to tunes on my old tape-deck, and who doesn’t enjoy a little nostalgia once and awhile?
100 Akres is a beat-tape label, which puts out some consistently neat cassette tapes, as well as their digital download releases. Recently I got an email telling me that there was a free mixtape hidden somewhere on their website…
Anyone is one the tracks off of the hidden tape, a majority of my trip-hop collection comes from sampled jazz and soul tracks, but Anyone seems to shy away from that trend, bringing some neato 80s synth sounds into the mix. THE FIRST TRACK TO EARN A BRILLIANCE TAG THIS YEAR!
Chrome Sparks is a USA- based artist who puts out neat music which falls somewhere in the ‘electronic-pop’ area. A wonderfull collaboration featuring the vocal talents of LA-based Steffaloo brought us Still Sleeping sometime around October last year, and it’s a fun track all-round.
Despite a focus on lo-fi folk, Steffaloo‘s voice is accustomed to geting the electronic remix treatment- and it’s a matchmade in heaven when combined with Chrome Sparks‘ dreamy production work. Overall, the track is upbeat enough to happily sway to, but not quite enough to get you embarrassing yourself all sweaty on the dance floor- although I speak for myself; I’m sure after a few too many guava shots you could find hordes of tie-dye clad and glow-stick equipped ravers moving their hands and their butts in a bizarre motion that could be considered dancing along to this great track. It’s been awhile since I’ve posted a soothing ambient track, and coincidentally I’m very hung-over today, so now would be as good a time as ever right?
Dreams West has created a real textural beauty with Distant. Reminiscent of Aphex Twin-style Selected Ambient Works, the sounds in Distant create a vast aural soundscape… Falling in short at 2.13, I would prefer the track to have lasted longer, however it’s more like splashing your face with cold water on a hot day- a quick and satisfying refreshment.
The come-down is a smooth fade out which isn’t jarring. You could even say that Distant calmly rests your mind and primes you for more listening pleasure (follow it with something like this).

I’ve spoken just recently about my lack of multi-linguistic talent, but this one’s pretty simple…
Fabled Enemies are one of the select few artists to earn the Fuck the Radio ‘brilliant’ tag, and they sure did deserve it!
Finally bringing their dubstep/glitch-hop sound to the live stage, the guys need votes to play in Melkweg Amsterdam, and it’s so simple to vote that it should be a crime not to.

There’s no simpler way of putting it: Midnight Smack‘s Tight Schedule is dope.
Sampled obscurities combined with a deep, hip-hop beat is the infallible recipe for success with trip-hop- another example of a track so good that it doesn’t need lyrics to make it interesting.

There’s something about the crackly-popping sound of an old vinyl record that I really dig, so when Innobushu‘s Moonlight opened with 90 or so seconds of the sound, I already knew I was in for a treat.
However, it’s not the lo-fi vinyl crackle that makes this a neat track, Moonlight‘s instrumentation is a great mix of synth leads and lo-fi jazz/soul samples. The highlight for me would be the syncopated drums which Innobushu pulls off perfectly- odd enough to be interesting, yet still rhythmic enough to bop your head to- this is possibly the greatest challenge when it comes to making future-beat, and in Moonlight it’s really tight.
Soulful and atmospheric, Moonlight is more than just a ‘beat’, it’s an instrumental song. Check it out:

When I was about 13 years old I loved the german industrial-metal band Rammstein. I loved them so much it inspired me to learn German… until I found out I was head-banging along to graphic lyrics about gay sex. This isn’t something I’m against; It was just a little shocking for my 13-year old self. Then I looked at the cover of my favourite album- an image of the band shirtless and oiled up, standing in-front of a giant flower… it was never the same.
I did see Rammstein live many years later and they were amazing… but something about the muscular front-man in make-up, adorned with feathers and tight black leather just haunted the back of my mind… Mann gegen Mann

Now the reason I bring up Rammstein is not because of their deceptively homosexual lyrics, but because I haven’t ever loved a foreign band so much as to want to learn the intricacies of their language since I was 13 and head-banging away to German metal…
This time in French; NÉBULEUSE(s) is an album title I’m not even going to BEGIN to try and pronounce. My French is a bit rusty these days (read: ‘non-existent’), but that didn’t stop me from getting into talented French hip-hop artist Don Da None, who self-released his debut EP Nébuleuse(s) for only €3 in November last year.
Don Da None‘s lyrics flow so well that it makes me wish I could speak French. There’s a sophistication in the way he speaks which compliments the amazing self-produced beats very well. Borrowing samples from rare soul and jazz records, Nébuleuse(s) would work as an instrumental album in it’s own right… In-fact, I have an instrumental copy of Le Bas Coté to give you!

The underground trip-hop community may seem like a never-ending sea of sampled beats and bedroom producers. And for the most part, it is! Albeit a glorious one full of unique rhythmic gems. Every now and then, in this new-age of internet distribution, a funny thing happens…
I had just purchased Zerolex‘s 2.z EP (off of bandcamp for only €1!) when no more than an hour later I got an email from Zerolex himself pointing me towards his music. I clicked the links he provided, stared at the album art for awhile thinking “Wow, this looks very familiar” until I realised he was currently playing in my iTunes.
All Over Again is the first of two tracks off of his more recent release on Combien Millie Records, which is available for free download. There’s some great future beat style trip-hop elements present throughout his tracks, and some really diverse and interesting sounds being used as well- check it out!
