ALTA – Stay Awhile by Chris

Shaping up to be the release of the year, you better believe I’m tagging Alta‘s Stay Awhile debut BRILLIANT (the lucky 7th tag earned this year).

From the seductive slowness of the eponymous opener Stay Awhile to the cheeky musac samples in Elevator, the overall progression of the record effortlessly moves from dreamy sample-heavy blues-ballads to solid trip-hop sounds in Next and Bees.

The most impressive element of Alta‘s sound is the way beatmaker Julius’ sample-heavy beats marry with vocalist Hannah’s organic soulful voice to create a fresh-yet-familiar vibe within the tracks. The only thing I dislike about this album is that when I listen to it on my iTunes, Alta Mira by Björk always comes on once it’s over and that song drives me fucking nuts; but, assuming you won’t have the same problem, I highly recommend you take the time to give this release a download.

Fuck the Radio EXORCIST Mixtape by Chris

It’s about time we released another Fuck the Radio mixtape! Bee Ampersand spun this up on Halloween and it’s packed full of dank head-bobbing goodness from local/international artists mixed into a seamless flowing 30-minute set (with the tracks split up so you can enjoy them individually too!) ranging from trip-hop, dubstep and more.

Indigo High with some proper decent acid jazz out of Chicago. Just listen to those keys.

The XX – Angels (Japanese Wallpaper remix) by Chris

I’m going to jump on posting Japanese Wallpaper so that I can brag about knowing him before he was big. At just 15 years of age, he’s pumping out some pretty simplistic, yet aurally pleasing stuff, and this remix of Angels is really something else. Cheers to you mate. This track is great.

You can catch Japanese Wallpaper at the upcoming INCA ROADS festival.

Skymning – Cemeteries (Totems Remix) by Chris

Skymning is the Swedish word for twilight, but not of the Stephanie Meyer vampire variety. One could listen to Skymning‘s 1993’s (released just two weeks ago at time of writing) and still feel it’s emotive hooks and melodies make for a better love story than Meyer’s trash.

The EP includes four original tracks, then four remixes of said tracks. Cemeteries as an original already stood out to me with it’s dank and mellow sound, but Totems has mixed it up into a lof-fi future-beat piece wildly different to the original- you could almost dace to it.

DEF LED – Moments by Chris

Spanish producer DEF LED dropped Moments for free download yesterday and it’s worth checking out. Its progression into a dance-y track makes it a real fun listen and something I look forward to playing out. I feel a sense of restrained enthusiasm through repetition, like it starts to get too exciting until glitching out at the four minute mark. Perhaps it could have gone for a minute or so shorter, but the cheeky fun of it all still makes for a regrettable finish and a reach towards the ‘replay’ button.

Evenings – Lo-Vélo by Chris

Can you believe it’s October already? only two more months and we’ll be celebrating New Years all over again, another batch of birthdays, ups and downs and what-nots to look forward to.

It was last year, about a month ago, Evenings released his Latley LP to the world via bandcamp. It’s a beautiful blend of shoegaze, trip-hop and what-not. I’ve only just discovered it now and I can not believe it didn’t sooner; it’s a stand-out album, full of playful experimentation and emotional input. Lo-Vélo is the fourth track on the album, coming right after a short-eight second interlude of found-sound. As a music blogger, you know I love to write- but every now and then it’s best to just shut up and let the music speak for itself- this is one of those times.

Check out the rest of the album here.

Aki Aki – Cockroach by Chris

I think what makes the music on this blog so compelling are the different sounds. I know that sounds fucking stupid, of-course it’s a music blog and music is just decorating time with lots of organised sounds- but if I really listen, I mean, really take my time to let the music into my brain… I like the particular noises; each little bleep and bloop used in these tracks and where they are placed.

There’s nothing ubiquitous about the sounds used in twisted soul and and future beat- unlike say, dubstep’s modern screeches and squeals that are replicated by every producer in every new release. Experimentation with sound is one of the coolest and most appealing creative outlets I can think of- the same way if you put a kid in-front of a drum-kit they’ll have a ton of fun making a huge amount of noise… When that kid is grown up he’ll have his field recorder, tapping light-globes with scissors, reversing the sound and adding copious amounts of reverb to create something your ears have never had the pleasure of experiencing yet.

Anyway, I guess what I’m getting at here is that I love the sounds in Aki Aki‘s Cockroach. It’s about 3-months old now, there’s been plenty of time for it to become boring and plain. But instead we all go on, simply doing what we love- creating sounds.

It’s happening, I’m giving Sorrow the BRILLIANT tag of BRILLIANCE here on Fuck the Radio for his exquisitely amazing 1988. The dark, melancholic sounds and smooth, flowing nature of the track come together to create an emotionally stimulating peice of electronic music. Everything hits the nail on the head perfectly here, from the percussive sounds to the ambient swirls of noise that drift on overhead. Not many tracks get tagged brilliant, but this one has thoroughly earned it.

INCA ROADS just this morning announced its killer line-up and it fits oh so perfectly within our FUCK THE RADIO  aesthetic; blending the best  mix of electronic artists, punk rock gems and other underground talent for a two-night camping adventure up in Mt. Eagerton (near Melbourne, Australia) from Nov 30-Dec 2nd.

The line-up includes a unique team-up set from the guys in the FUCK THE RADIO Collective: Yosemite, Bee Ampersand, Colourwaves, Willow Beats, Sub Dapper and Squarehead. They’ll all be on stage at the same time making music live together (like a real band!).

There’s also a pretty rad selection of art installations AND no outrageously expensive drink prices; it’s BYO!!

Early-bird memberships are on-sale at the moment for only $70+bf (the cheapest 3-day festival ever). We’ll be covering the event on the blog (in addition to our regular posting).

Kawakami Kohei – Ghost Scale by Chris

Continuing on from my last post of glitchy electronic goodness, I’m going for something a tad more accessible, consider your training wheels if you are having trouble getting into the more experimental sides of IDM. Kawakami Kohei’s Ghost Scale is hands down fucking dope. Meticulous attention to detail, endless slicing, dicing and re-arranging create what is one of the most interesting listens I’ve posted in a-while. Check it:

Colossius – CAS L.A. by Chris

I know hectic glitchy experimental electronica might not be everybody’s jam, but I’m pretty pumped to have this new ltd. edition 7″ by Colossius zooming across the ocean towards my house.

Released as a celebration of independent label Fresh yO!‘s 2nd birthday; the digital download is pro bono and the vinyl is a measly 6 euros if you are interested- fans of Aphex Twin and Venetian Snares‘ wilder stuff will probably find the two tracks a-lot more accessible, and I’m sure Autechre fans will appreciate the wacked out hints of hip-hop in ISOL8.

CAS L.A. is a chaotic mash of electronic bleeps and bloops, it’s addictive and well-thought out. The surgically sliced up samples and bizarre synths come together in a syncopated rhythmic EXPERIENCE LIKE NO OTHER.

How’s that for a review? Pretty nifty eh? Just check it out; you either enjoy IDM or you don’t… kinda like licorice.

Kid Deep – Shake It Up by Chris

Aside from having the best Soundcloud bio description ever “I can’t wait ’til this set is over, ‘cuz I’ve got a roll of Lifesavers in my pocket, and pineapple is next..” Perth’s Kid Deep produces some pretty fresh sample-heavy beats.

Yoshimitsu – Bugz (Kaligraph E remix) by Chris

I used to have crazy amounts of fun playing as Yoshimitsu in Tekken because he had this one move where he’d stab himself. I was such a sadistic little shit back in my childhood I’d play the game as him just to watch Yoshimitsu stab himself in the gut over and over for my own enjoyment.

Anyway, that’s completley irrelevant when discussing this particular Yoshimitsu collective. Blaster Master displays future-beat at it’s finest; a perfect blend of Fly-Lo style syncopation and engaging sounds. Marisa Tomei shows a subtle hint of down-tempo romanticism and tranquil repose. I’m posting Kaligraph E‘s harder remix of Bugz from a few months back though. It’s a stand out.

You can check out some free downloads if you like what you head from their soundcloud.
