Melbourne audio/visual duo Friendships are dope and you should see them whenever you have the chance to do so; A few days ago HW&W/Soulection alumnus Sango came all the way down from Michigan and played a set that clashed with them, but I was still in the locals room going HAM to Friendships‘ unique brand of hectic #BASS. Luckily for you Melbourne readers, the duo are throwing their own party at Centrefold Lounge, a strip club(?- I’ve never been). The afternoon kicks off at 1pm and will feature live performances from recent collaborators The Harpoons, local //THIS THING// hero Electric Sea Spider, industrial boys Forces and DJ sets from 2Fuddha and Fletch. Entry is only $10 and includes free admission to the sleazier half of Centrefold Lounge for the rest of the night (because why not?).

Alta – Wash it Down by Chris

Our friends ALTA seem to blow minds with every release.

Amin Payne & Ben Bada Boom – UTURN MEON by Chris

There’s somewhat of a global effort behind this collaboration between local Melbourne hero Amin Payne, Germany-based Ben Bada Boom and French label Cascade Records. A well-deserved sexy video for a sexy song; pushing the limits of what the YouTube monkeys will allow.

Amin and Ben have a talent for making beats which stand on their own as ‘songs’ rather than simplistic instrumentals- really bringing the craft to a new level of creativity and musicianship.

Flow – A Soul’s Journey by Chris

Fuck the Radio Collective experimental beatsmith Flow has teamed up with our visual artist friend Chronic Sans from the amazing Melbourne-based Spacewalk collective to put together a clip for the wonky track A Soul’s Journey.

You can catch both of them in action, as well as a huge line-up of other great locals for Spacewalk’s Spring Break Party free across 2 venues.Image

Willow Beats – Alchemy EP by Chris

Fuck the Radio Collective home boys Willow Beats have been super busy, returning from a sold-out national tour to support the release of their second EP (below).

I had a quick exchange with Narayana earlier,

There are some tracks on the EP that I started a year ago, some that came together in the last few weeks!
We tried much more experimenting with this EP. There are a-lot more recorded samples and things like the water drops in Elemental (recorded in my bath tub). A-lot more attention was paid to the individual sounds as well. I wanted every small aspect to be as good as I could make it.
The tour was sold out which was incredible! It was amazing to see the amount of support we have! You don’t really realise from Facebook etc but when you see support in numbers its incredible.

Willow Beats – Alchemy preview by Chris

Fuck the Radio Collective artists Willow Beats have just dropped a preview video for their new single Alchemy to be released on the 11th of March.

If you live in Melbourne you can catch them live throughout March as they play through their Workers Club residency, with support from Allday and other FTR Collective artists ColourwavesAlta and Yosemite.

Alta – Stay Awhile by Chris

ALTA are no strangers to Fuck the Radio but if for some reason you ignored our urgings to GO GRAB THEIR BRILLIANT FREE EP last time, perhaps this reminder will sway you. Check out the dope new video above while you are at it.

Been digging this kind of sound lately- a little different from the usual mellow beats and pieces that find their way onto FTRbut it’s a Monday and I’ve just re-charged my batteries with a 13hour sleepfest. Perfect way to start the week with a positive attitude.

Olympic Ayres is an indie duo from Sydney, Australia. Check out the video above, and give The View a free download below.

PS: From Melbourne, Australia? Some exciting news for you soon…

Elizabeth Rose – Ready by Chris

Thought I’d hit you up with something slightly different today; Elizabeth Rose is doing an Aussie tour, and since she’s already established herself as a local favourite on the Summer festival circuit, the news has a-lot of people excited. If you are keen you might want to check out the article I wrote for Purple Sneakers.

The video for her January single titled Ready got released earlier this month. It has lots of colours and seizure-inducing effects- and although I’m not usually a fan of videos that look like someone has vomited rainbows onto film and animated it- the music makes the clip well worth it in this case. Her electronic-pop fusion kind of nods towards the stylings of La Roux, but without sounding like 100 kittens drowning in a pool of acid. Check it.

James Litherland – Where To Turn by Chris

This weekend I’m going to hit you up with another video (perhaps I’ll do this regularly from now on):

The main focus is on the first minute or so- James Blake fans will get tingles. Funnily enough, it was James Blake‘s father who produced Where to Turn, released back in November ’06 before James Blake heavily re-worked it into the minimalist-electronica piece that it is now The Wilhelm Scream. Give the original a listen and see what you think- I must admit progressive rock is not usually my thing, and James Blake did such a magnificent job capturing the mournful emotion behind the lyrics in his version; but I’m a real sucker for talking about samples and the whole father/son thing makes for a neat story.

Of-course, if you don’t know what I’m talking about, you simply must check out James Blake‘s The Whilhelm Scream which I coincidently included on this mixtape.

Also, if you think this sort of stuff is cool- I recently wrote an article with some more widely-known samples for Purple Sneakers right here: http://www.purplesneakers.com.au/2012/03/listen-where-does-that-sample-come-from/

A special post for the weekend… I love me some Fatboy Slim but the original sample is pretty dope too.

A good tune for the Ides of March no?

I’m an addict to the stuff Ninja Tune releases on their label. This has been heavily played to my ears. There’s a remix of it in the new years mixtape you can find a few posts back.
