Terracotta Blue, producer from Washington DC, transmits his enthusiasm for chill wave and trip hop by creating his own unique fusion of heavenly samples and delicate drums. His latest album Shine Again is a collection of radiant beats that fill my soul with love.
Other Eden, the last and certainly not least track of Shine Again, harmoniously completes this blissful album through its modulating dynamics. The heart-warming track takes you on a luminous and joyful voyage through layers of satisfying sounds. Constantly developing, this beat evolves from minimal to decorative, and then to the pleasant repetition of a woodwind descending perfect fourth (oh so satisfying). The tension is re-heightened through a rousing crescendo of percussion until the snare sneaks in and truly hits the spot. This kind of drop had me gasping and laughing in awe of its pure perfection all the way to the smooth fade out.
The whole 10-track album is available for a pick-your-price download on Bandcamp.

San Francisco producer/MC Old Dirty Socks (or LO his rap alias) is an imminent artist from the US who is gaining popularity globally, having worked with Aussie legend Ta-Ku on a compilation project Night Swimmers as well as names like Prof. Logik, Fonetik Simbol and Venezuela’s Doktor Rheal to name a few. Releasing both instrumental beats as well as a few vocal tracks, ODS is a versatile musician with a clear passion for hip hop that manifests in his composition, both production and flow.
Dirty Socks Volume Three is the perfect combination of raw hip-hop percussion under and evocative jazzy melodies. The irresistible vinyl crackle and nostalgic vibes of each beat hold the album together to create a natural and effortless story through a warm selection of classic 70s soul samples. Similar to Apollo Brown and Mattron who have that same filtered soul style. The seemingly seamless flow of each track as well as that chopped vinyl/trip hop sound we all dig make this an accessible album over which to spit rhymes and jam, two-step with your lover, or just to bop your head to and max out. Not your typical neck snapping beats; the album is a delightful mixture of subtle beat drops and boom bap drums.

I’ve had this one for a-while, but I have to share, because Brussels-based Sir Deckster is a really fantastic find. With a solid musical fusion of various elements- there’s a hint of The XX, perhaps a little SBTRKT and everything in-between. Rewind Me Up features some smooth jazzy vocals which mesh very well with the intricate percussion and fluttery ambiance.

Ape Tit is a funky beat duo out of Denver who utilize real instruments in their production to create jazzy hip-hop beats. Electric Elephant is an older release (it hit bandcamp back in May this year), while Make Love To YOU only appeared on Soundcloud a week or two ago.

Shaping up to be the release of the year, you better believe I’m tagging Alta‘s Stay Awhile debut BRILLIANT (the lucky 7th tag earned this year).
From the seductive slowness of the eponymous opener Stay Awhile to the cheeky musac samples in Elevator, the overall progression of the record effortlessly moves from dreamy sample-heavy blues-ballads to solid trip-hop sounds in Next and Bees.
The most impressive element of Alta‘s sound is the way beatmaker Julius’ sample-heavy beats marry with vocalist Hannah’s organic soulful voice to create a fresh-yet-familiar vibe within the tracks. The only thing I dislike about this album is that when I listen to it on my iTunes, Alta Mira by Björk always comes on once it’s over and that song drives me fucking nuts; but, assuming you won’t have the same problem, I highly recommend you take the time to give this release a download.

Indigo High with some proper decent acid jazz out of Chicago. Just listen to those keys.

Ta-Ku has been kicking-ass after ass with his consistent high-quality beat-releases, and the 50 Days of Dilla project is possibly his most ambitious and successful yet. 50 Days for Dilla vol. 1 was released digitally under HW&W in March with the vinyl following two months later in May as HW&W‘s first official vinyl release. The vinyl sold out within 6 hours of its online release and I managed to bag the second-to-last copy.
Vol. 2 was released online on July 24th and for $10, the remaining 25 tracks of the project can be yours… Or you can hang-out for the vinyl (they’d be crazy not to release one after the last response).
The remaining 25 beats are brief (none break the 3 minute mark, as with the previous volume), however I wouldn’t want to attempt a feat like producing a beat every day for 50 days, so the length is easily forgivable. The quality is of a standard which can be expected from an established producer like Ta-Ku, the drums swing just right, the samples stutter and glitch to neat effect… and the overall feel of the record is something I could have constantly on in the background without a worry. The Dilla inspiration is clear and present- somewhat overpowering in-fact. I would have liked to see a little more deviation and stylistic twist from Ta-Ku considering his past proven skills with glitchy electronics, however this is not the aim of the record- as a tribute album, it works quite fantastically.

The mysterious Doppelgangaz duo produce some killer hip-hop and are on their way up the ladder- their music has been featured on the front-page of bandcamp, and I can foresee some favourable reviews coming their way.
I know normally on this blog I feature largely instrumental tracks, today I’m posting Here We Go which has some pretty dope flow and lyricism as well as tight, jazz-sample-based production. If you are into rap, I recommend checking the rest of their tracks. As whole, the record flows quite smoothly from start to end.

Desmond Cheese‘s beats are dope. Saw the Signs Pt. 2 is an instrumental cut off of a release he did with Mr Bill about a year ago, and it’s got all of the best ingredients: jazz, bass and essence of sex.
You could do just about anything with this music playing and it’d instantly give it a totally new groovy vibe. Seriously, you could be eating a taco or something, and some hottie could walk past you and think nothing of it. But if you were eating a taco with this music on the hottie would be dtf.
Enjoy 🙂

This suave jazz record makes me want to don a sleek suit and fedora combo, go out- order a scotch rocks and eye beautiful women across the bar while leaning on a billiards cue.
Yeah, it’s that specific.
The whole album is out for free here. You can also order physical CD and stream the album on the band-camp page linked below.
