Woot woot, the second Fuck the Radio party was a success, with acts Yosemite, Flash Forest and Sub Dapper killing it on-stage with a surprise set by exciting up-and comers Willowbeats.
The hangover has subsided and the blogging must go on. To bring us all down from our parties induced-highs I present you an ethereal track of purified dreaminess.
Patterns In Plastic already had a wonderfully fulfilling sound on their hands, but for me it was Sina. who brought the wonderful to marvellous with a divine remix of Sleepyhead.
I’ve been playing way too much Diablo 3 latley, so the entire list of of the adjectives I know at the moment is like looking up ‘evil’ in the Thesaurus. But if you were to look at the ‘antonym’ section of the thesaurus for ‘evil’, you’d probably find some neat descriptive words for this track…
…what a bizarre review…

The gap between producers and musicians is a precarious one, especially when it comes to playing live. Squarehead played at Fuck the Radio‘s opening night just over a week ago and put on an amazing show.
Performing songs live as a trio, complete with bass guitar and 50 different effects pedals- if you have the chance, Squarehead are not an act you want to miss if you love music (and, if you read this blog- I assume you do).
Raindrops is a beautifully composed track with a multitude of evolving bits and pieces that in the right atmosphere just fill the room and take you in for a musical candlelit journey over forests and deserts on the back of a magical flying flamingo. The rest of the free album shares a similar feeling, only perhaps with different flying magical animals. It’s something I can’t really describe without sounding like a maniac, so don’t just take my word for it- grab the album, and catch them live in Melbourne on the 21st (link below)… I’ll be there with my flamingo.

AND we are back to regular posting schedule. What better way to kick off the week by welcoming all the new members of the Fuck the Radio family to an old favourite; A Bliss Abyss.
The North-Carolina based musician/psycho friend of mine has up and left his friends and family to hike the Appalachian trail solo with little resources to seek solitude. It’s some serious Into the Wild movie style shit, and standing at roughly 2,180 miles- the Appalachian trail passes through no less than 14 American states, and is one of the longest marked hiking trails in the world. Only one-quarter of those who attempt to hike the entire trail succeed. The journey typically takes six months to complete.
Anyway, enough of the geography lesson, you’re here for music; and A Bliss Abyss is one of the most talented and brilliant producers I have ever met. He released his EP for free download off of his website and is surviving entirely on the donations of fans.
The Moksha EP itself is one of the most beautifully crafted records of the year. I can’t recommend it more highly. An amazing blend of electronic music combined with guitar, topped off with brilliant production skills and an ear for incredible detail- this is something to have on repeat for quite a while. Grab it for free off of his website:

Canadian producer TAWD released his Northwestern Passages EP this time last month and I’ve finally gotten the chance to give it a listen-through. As the perfect counterpart for the dreamy Sleep ∞ Over or Boy Friend style chillwave records, TAWD hits the nail right on the head with his own label of ‘chillgaze’. Synth-heavy and atmospheric, much of TAWD‘s EP induces feelings of soaring through the pink sky over beautiful landscapes. When that last synth trail slowly fades to silence at the end of the EP’s last track Eight Years, it’s like you’ve finally waved goodbye and disappeared into the horizon riding on a magical cloud.

Such talent can and has come into fruition with the discovery of the ‘bedroom producer’ age of music. Age, wealth and status is no longer an issue, as demonstrated by the BRILLIANTLY (that’s right everyone! TAGGING THIS ONE AS BRILLIANT) chilled sounds of XXYYXX, an under-age talent out of Orlando Florida who; just like a Japanese baby playing Through the Fire and Flames on ukulele will shatter your dreams of ever being a good guitarist; his magnificent music will shatter any dreams you had of ever being a super-talented producer (what an obscure reference, even for me).
About You was released late march earlier this year, but the video above came out a few days ago and is pretty fucking awesome itself. The rest of XXYYXX albums are also as consistently amazing and well worth checking out if you dig this lo-fi mellow electronica. Get on it so you can be all like “I liked him before he was cool” because seriously, people will cream themselves over this stuff.

Everyone has bizzare rituals; whether it be conditioning thier hair before they shampoo, purposely wearing socks inside out- or something a little more involved, like sitting in the same seat at the same bar every Friday after work and ordering the same drink. We all have little things that we like to keep to ourselves- it’s what keeps us sane. For me, every Sunday night after I get home from the radio station, I pour myself a small glass of red wine, turn the TV onto the ‘classic movies’ channel (where they play all the old black-and white films), mute it, and listen to music.
Kwala‘s album Shabang may be the perfect soundtrack for these moments. As wine slowly stains my lips and the suave-looking detective in the movie lights up his cigar, Kwala‘s expansive pads and smooth down-tempo rhythms fill the full aural spectrum. Not demanding enough to be abrasive or distracting, yet far from being boring or repetitive- the best way to describe Kwala‘s music would be something like ‘post-trip-hop’. Excuse my ‘typical-music-blogger-making-up-meaningless-genres-to-avoid-actually-describing-the-music’, but being superfluous when it comes to these things does nothing justice. Plus I want to enjoy my wine.
The full album is available here for a pick-your-price download and it comes with my highest recommendation:
<edit: It seems to have disappeared, but there is still some great stuff up there>

Following on from my recent posting trend of gorgeous dream-pop chicks I want to have babies with (see Steffaloo and Stumbleine); Stefanie Franciotti is the sole remaining member of Sleep ∞ Over, which was previously a trio. However this is a music blog and not a gossip-magazine, so I’m going to look past whatever it was that made former members Christa Palazzolo and Sarah Brown break away from the group and form their own duo Boy Friend (who, if you are interested; I’ve written about here).
Romantic Streams comes from the full length debut Forever, which is contains elements of equal-parts shoegaze and dream-pop… in-fact I could rant on forever using words like chillwave, glo-fi and noise-rock; but instead this time I’m going to let the music speak for itself for once.

Reminiscent of Oliver Tank, Wintercoats and even Steffaloo, the Bristol-based glo-fi artist Stumbleine is consistently superb, and with the recent release of a new album off of bandcamp, now is as good a time as ever to post the relaxing ambient chillwave peice Bloom released a little over a year ago within the pick-your price All For Your Smile.
Make sure you check out the new album:

I’m going away for the week to enjoy the great Australian summer, so to keep your ears satisfied while I’m gone…
Another Fuck the Radio mixtape!
Fuck Melody features some artists you’ve already seen on this blog, and some you haven’t- it plays out like a DJ set, however the tracks are all split into individual files to make listening a breeze. Also included are links to all the artists featured.
I guarantee you’ll love it- or your money back it’s free! You literally have NOTHING to lose.

The Townhouses is a deceptively pluralised name for what is fundamentally a solo project out of Melbourne, Australia. Although main artistic mastermind Leigh Hanna is accompanied by Hamish Brooke on trumpet in Backyard to create a dreamy atmospheric chillwave piece with a subtle hint of African musical influence.
Backyard fills out the musical spectrum in an enriching way; with the deep bass drums grounding the low-end of the frequency spectrum contrasting nicely with the glitchy lyric-less vocal line and hi-hat flutterings that occupy the mid and high sections respectively. Your ears will appreciate the variety of sounds used in the piece and how well The Townhouses has managed to fit them all neatly together in one beautiful package.

Here we are, the first post of 2012- going to Wintercoats from Melbourne, Australia.
Someone to Share My Life With is a cover of sorts- the original being the folky tune by Television Personalities of the same name; but Wintercoats has transformed the clanky electric guitar into the type of beautiful downtempo/chillwave that Aussies seem to be quite talented in producing. Fans of Oliver Tank will enjoy the sounds that Wintercoats have to offer- and on that note Wintercoats is Oliver‘s support act in Melbourne on the 20th for his EP launch party.
Give the track a download and be sure to check out their bandcamp page for several more tracks and an EP all being given away for free! 😀
