Chet Faker – Melt feat. Kilo Kish

This is going to be all over the blogosphere but how could I resist. Local superstar Chet Faker (who skyrocketed to stardom with his amazing cover of Blackstreet’s No Diggity) teaming up with the totally dope Kilo Kish (check out K+ if you missed the boat on her).

I caught a bit of Chet Faker‘s set at Splendour in the Grass (major Aussie music festival) and his fan-base ranged from drunk teens to groovy middle-aged couples. A testament to the brilliant accessibility of his music.

Duke Westlake – Re. Turn

Duke Westlake’s Re. Turn is an impressive 30 tracks large. Ranging from chillout to electronica to straight up hip-hop, this album contains an impressive variety of different sounds and samples, worth hitting play and kicking back to.

Released by the soulful hip-hop centred Mello Music Group (Oddisee, Apollo Brown), the whole thing only costs an easy $7.50 to be yours to keep, or just stream it on Bandcamp above.

Leaks De Landa EP Launch

At age 19, Thomas Guida aka. Leaks is the youngest member of the Fuck the Radio Collective. His De Landa EP (out on the free digital label Absent Fever) was put out late May, and is holding up to be one of my favourite releases of the year (check out the brilliant I’m Glad You’re Still Here). He’s finally got a release party together with supports from Audego, Surf Dad and fellow brilliant Fuck the Radio artists Alta.

If you are in Melbourne on the 19th, you can head down to Ding Dong lounge, where Guida will be giving away 100 limited physical copies of the EP for free, and also playing for you live. As you can imagine, I have seen him live before and just a hint: it’s a good gig to bring a special guy/girl friend along to for holding hands and looking into each-other’s eyes n shit.

OR just go with your 100% nothing suss platonic mates and chill out to some soothing beats either way.

Wintercoats – Heartful

One of my favourite local young Melbourne artists, Wintercoats released the soothing EP Heartful in April as a ‘name your price’ download via Bandcamp.

Wintercoats will be performing at the Yes Please 2nd Birthday Party happening in Melbourne on July 18 at The Worker’s Club with live sets in the band room from artists on the Yes Please artists I’lls, Fishing, Wintercoats, Guerre and The Townhouses. Plus DJ sets in the front bar from Oscar Key Sung, Andras Fox, Simon Winkler, Tim Shiel and Adam Christou.

Willow Beats – Alchemy EP

Fuck the Radio Collective home boys Willow Beats have been super busy, returning from a sold-out national tour to support the release of their second EP (below).

I had a quick exchange with Narayana earlier,

There are some tracks on the EP that I started a year ago, some that came together in the last few weeks!
We tried much more experimenting with this EP. There are a-lot more recorded samples and things like the water drops in Elemental (recorded in my bath tub). A-lot more attention was paid to the individual sounds as well. I wanted every small aspect to be as good as I could make it.
The tour was sold out which was incredible! It was amazing to see the amount of support we have! You don’t really realise from Facebook etc but when you see support in numbers its incredible.

Leaks – I’m Glad You’re Still Here

Fuck the Radio Collective homeboy Leaks went quiet for a bit while travelling.

Good to have him back. This track gets my BRILLIANCE tag.

Dylan Hill – The Fall

Melbourne-based Dylan Hill shows a great deal of heart in his productions, with the same mellowing touch of say, Leaks or even Holy Other.

The Fall blends recorded guitar with some fluttery electronic instrumentation, some soft-to the touch percussive samples and delicate vocals- a style that’s rapidly developing it’s own little place in the greater scheme of electronic music through the likes of Oliver Tank, the aforementioned Leaks and many more.

Sub Dapper – Girls

Fuck the Radio Collective‘s Sub Dapper has an EP on the way. About a week ago he dropped this to tide us over while we wait.

Girls soothes on the surface, but intrigues with intricate glitching and constant progressive evolution. Not one part of this track is boring. It gets my BRILLIANT tag (the first track of the year to do so!)

For more brilliance, check out last year’s tape.

Dusty Milk Crates Vol. 3

Our friends at Condensed Milk have released an instant-classic. This is a must-have compilation of amazing future soul and beat-music.

CDMK‘s Dusty Milk Crate compilations have being important chapters in the book of the contemporary underground beat scene around the world since the first volume’s debut last year. This volume boasts an impressive line-up of producers from all-around the world including (to name only a very few) VanillaRoughsoulOisimaFlash ForestSilent JayM-PhazesAmin PaYnE and many, many more.

Go ahead to grab it. By the way, it’s totally free.

Spoonty – Feels

Eleven groovy beats by Sydney producer Spoonty have made their way onto bandcamp for a new release called Feels. Quite a well-polished production overall, this is no mere collection of rough ‘n raw beats with none of the tracks falling below three minutes; these are all fully fleshed out grooves to get down to.

Something about this album reminds me of the style of Bonobo, which can never be a bad thing. Heaps sings out with immaculate vocal chops while Forest makes use of a smoothly carved up flute. Quite frankly, the samples fit perfect like honey and lemon- while the beats are as smooth as Morgan Freeman’s voice after a nice honey and lemon tea. The whole thing is musically delicious experience.

Wafia & Japanese Wallpaper Show

An exciting all-ages show is hard to come by. I don’t say this to complain about today’s tasteless youth (although the existence of One Direction proves that there is indeed an abundance of that), I say this because it was not very long ago that I too was an under-age music fan, desperately craving an event I could legally go to without some over-priced flavour of the month pop-headliner (whatever happened to Wynter Gordon?).

Brisbane-based indie-folk artist Wafia is being joined by Fuck the Radio favourite Japanese Wallpaper on the Melbourne leg of her short tour at 1000 pound Bend this Sunday and everyone (young and old) is invited.

If you are in Melbourne, why not go grab a beer/juice and kick back to some tunes in our extended summer.
