Finji – Do Something

Moving away from chillwave today, this track by Finji is more loud and upbeat.

Reminding me off Mu-Gen‘s Fizzdom which I posted way back in 2010, Do Something is powered through by driving hi-hats and an unrelenting bassy kick drum. There’s no easy way to describe it, and I’m going to avoid being too verbose in this post… so give it a download and see what you think 🙂

The Townhouses – Backyard

The Townhouses

The Townhouses is a deceptively pluralised name for what is fundamentally a solo project out of Melbourne, Australia. Although main artistic mastermind Leigh Hanna is accompanied by Hamish Brooke on trumpet in Backyard to create a dreamy atmospheric chillwave piece with a subtle hint of African musical influence.

Backyard fills out the musical spectrum in an enriching way; with the deep bass drums grounding the low-end of the frequency spectrum contrasting nicely with the glitchy lyric-less vocal line and hi-hat flutterings that occupy the mid and high sections respectively. Your ears will appreciate the variety of sounds used in the piece and how well The Townhouses has managed to fit them all neatly together in one beautiful package.

Amai – Counting Raindrops

Amai is yet another trip-hot beatmaker from Los Angeles. I don’t know what it is about that city, but it sure has an amazing knack of producing great experimental electronica artists. Fans of Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Nosaj Thing etc. will recognise the familiar LA tinge that Amai has in his rhythms and odd-ball sample re-triggering.

Counting Raindrops is a jazzy trip-hop piece that is cemented nicely together by smooth tenor saxophone, LA trip-hop style drum rhythms and neatly chopped up female vocals that fit ever-so nicely into place together. Download it here, or find the entire EP for fee at his bandcamp page.

Wintercoats – Someone to Share My Life With

Here we are, the first post of 2012- going to Wintercoats from Melbourne, Australia.

Someone to Share My Life With is a cover of sorts- the original being the folky tune by Television Personalities of the same name; but Wintercoats has transformed the clanky electric guitar into the type of beautiful downtempo/chillwave that Aussies seem to be quite talented in producing. Fans of Oliver Tank will enjoy the sounds that Wintercoats have to offer- and on that note Wintercoats is Oliver‘s support act in Melbourne on the 20th for his EP launch party.

Give the track a download and be sure to check out their bandcamp page for several more tracks and an EP all being given away for free! 😀

Happy New Year!

It’s been an exciting year for Fuck the Radio in 2011, more than tripling the average daily reader count- receiving  several DMCA complaints, and the launch (and subsequent censorship) of the Fuck The Radio Radio Show.

Regular readers will be familiar with the coveted ‘brilliance’ tag on the blog- awarded to tracks that are truly in a class of their own. For new years this year I’ve collected said brilliant tracks into one neat little package. For your downloading pleasure. This very special Fuck the Radio Brilliance Vol. 1 contains every track (that did not receive a DMCA take-down shake-down notice) tagged as brilliant since the blog’s creation.

You can find it HERE

The track-listing goes:

OpiuoRobo Booty

El Ten ElevenHot Cakes

Stateless – Ariel

Fabled Enemies The Prophecy

Nosaj Thing 1685/Bach

Lemon Jelly – Page One

Pretty Lights – Something’s Wrong

James Blake Air and Lack Thereof

Skream Midnight Request Line

Secret Knives – Black Hole

A.Bliss.Abyss Sakajaweea

Inaudible – Echo Chamber

Polographia – Righteous Hit

😀 It’s a MUST HAVE for anybody looking for some great new music, with genres including dubstep, glitch-hop, chillwave and shoegaze- it’s a great example of the sounds the Fuck the Radio blog loves so much.

DOWNLOAD IT HERE

In addition to the mixtape, you can find the complete 2010 and 2011 catalogues here (2010) and here (2011) for some more music if you like!

Now 2012 is a New Year and there are several ideas in the works to make even FTR bigger and better. The most important change will be that the focus will now be on independent and largely undiscovered artists that I come cross in my digi-digging. Remember, if you are an artist yourself- keep sending in links to your music at fucktheradio@dubcage.com or even on facebook.com/ftheradioblog.

Now it’s New Years, time to get drunk.

Repeat Pattern (previously posted here) has released a new digital album with one of my favourite indie labels, Cascade Records. The album is available for a name-your-price download on http://cascaderecords.bandcamp.com/album/08-09

It’s a neat acid-jazz cross trip-hop record, I highly recommend you go grab it… and while your at it, why not support the artist with a few bucks?

PS: I’ll be posting another mixtape for new years, so stay tuned for Jan 1st

Nowan – Quantum Reality

Nowan is a Sweedish producer who has been putting out some beautiful IDM tracks. He’s been picked up by Screwloose Records (who sign dubstep badmen KOAN Sound and Tim Ismag) to release a debut EP early next year.

This track Quantum Reality was released as part of Screwloose’s free Christmas EP which you can find here. It’s fundamentally an IDM track, but now that ‘dubstep’ is such a blog-friendly genre label, I suppose it would be fair to call it that as well. There is a deep sub-bass throughout that grounds the whole track, leaving the beautiful synths and pads to create an expansive atmosphere throughout. This is not a track for laptop speakers or ipod headphones. This is something to play though a proper stereo-system and really enjoy. The glitchy effects and drums are used to perfect effect- somethimes it can be too tempting for artists to over-use stuttering effects and sliced samples in IDM, leaving the track sounding messy; but Nowan has utilised them perfectly.

Mocky – Hymne

CHERRY MISTMAS

Hope all is well, and that your  relatives aren’t giving you too much grief.

There are obvious songs that are ‘christmassy’. You’ve got your Santa related shit like Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and Jingle Bells and whatnot… Then there’s always the more modern trashy pop songs Jingle Bell Rock  (which I do admit is kinda catchy) and All I Want For Christmas Is You (ugh)

Then of-course you have your more traditional religious carols… Silent Night, Away in a Manger… Ave Maria.

But then there are songs that are ‘christmassy’ without referencing presents, santa, or some super-baby demi-god being born in a dumpy  farm shack.

Today I’m posting a track by Mocky called Hymne and it’s one of those christmassy feeling songs, but not necessarily cemented forever within the latter half of December by cheesy lyrics. It takes real talent to come up with something that can capture a feeling like  ‘christmassy’ with choral vocals and piano. It’s a neat piece.

Geotic – Bless the Self
December 23, 2011, 12:57 AM

Will Wiesenfeld has operated under numerous aliases, including his most famous monkier Baths and his older project [Post-Foetus].

Geotic is an ambient/minimal side-project by Wiesenfeld that has seen the multiple free releases on here. His most recent release- the EP entitled Bless the Self is what I’m posting about this fine summery night.

In Australia, we have summer during Christmas time, and so rather than associating the festive season with snowmen and ice-skating- it’s all about sitting back on the beach with your mates under the hot summer sun… Or enjoying a sunny Christmas bbq with a beer in hand. If you were to capture the feeling of Christmas in Australia on a super-8 film (to the young kids… that means something like the ‘hipstermatic’ app on your iPhone), Bless the Self would be a suitable soundtrack, joyous and colourful, filled with smiling girls wearing sunglasses laughing happily on the sandy beach. This probably comes from the soothing field-recording of the sound of light wind that Wiesenfeld has utilized throughout the record reminding me of waves at the beach.

The whole album plays through gaplessley- working much like a 14minute long ambient track, it is true that the whole is much greater that the sum of each individual track. In fact, I would hazard a guess and say that Bless the Self began it’s life as one track that was split up into 5 separate parts. For this reason I’m not going to bother posting a Fuck the Radio download, but rather link you to the official download for the EP itself. Don’t worry- it’s still free. Although Geotic appreciates donations made here.

Broke – 40s With Ghost

I’ve had this album for quite awhile, sitting on my iTunes accumulating plays.

I think it’s time I posted about it.

40s With Ghost is a short track (under 1 minute). I highly recommend you check out the FREE ALBUM which is a collaboration between artists Ackryte, Broke and Repeat Pattern out on Cascade Records’ bandcamp page.

This track by Broke is a jazzy downtempo piece with neat sampled flourishes throughout it. I chose to post this particular track simply because it’s a good teaser for the rest of the amazing album. Seriously. Check it out.

Adam F – 8Ball

Have I posted any drum and bass/jungle before?

No?

Oh, that’s strange… Here’s Adam F with 8 Ball. It’s pretty rad. It’s got this jazzy bassline drop in it- something I’d play if owned a hectic snooker bar where everyone wore suits with fedoras and drank scotch on the rocks. Anybody know of anywhere like that? I’d like to go.

I guess this track will have to do in the meantime…

Handbook – 23

Handbook‘s music is no stranger to people’s ears, at 10,000+ Soundcloud fans, he could easily sit back on his throne of musical accomplishment and feed bullshit to the masses.

But there’s a nostalgic sincerity present throughout Handbook‘s music that brings groups like The Avalanches and perhaps, Bibio to mind. I think ‘sweet’ would be the right way of describing it… not candy sweet or pleased frat boy “sweeeet”; but bringing flowers home to your wife ‘sweet’.

No, despite having followers in the 5 digits, Handbook crafts his music with love. And the wonderful 23 is a good example 🙂

Inaudible – Echo Chamber

My issue these days is that there are so many amazing artists out there putting out countless good songs- I have a tough time deciding who I want to write about!

Inaudible is without doubt deserving of a post- his music is brilliant. That’s right, he’s getting tagged as BRILLIANT. Welcome to the club Inaudible. I spent the past hour trying to decide which of your songs I was going to post until I finally gave up and picked at random. Echo Chamber is just that perfect level of heavy upbeat glitch-hop that I absolutely love. There are some crazy sounds in this track that suck you in, and on each subsequent listen it becomes clear just how much attention to small details goes into this music.

Echo Chamber does not need vocals to make it better- to the contrary, it’s actually too good for vocals… something every producer of this genre sound strive to achieve in my opinion.

Check out the Scathed Youth EP from Inaudible‘s bandcamp page too- it’s got a few more gems as equally as good as Echo Chamber.
