Rapidly gaining a well-deserved following is UK-based Capeface, a name you may be familiar with if you checked out our FUCK THE RADIO: EXORCIST MIXTAPE. On-top of tagging this release BRILLIANT (oh shit yes) download it free here right now -> http://www.mediafire.com/?a1e22bbelyc70jo. I caught up with Capeface a little while back to ask a few quick questions- hit the soundcloud ‘play’ button below and read what he had to say while soaking up his lush sounds.
First up- where’d you start? How’d you get into music?
I had a really classical upbringing to music. I started learning to play the tuba as well as joining a choir at the age of 8, more out of curiosity than anything, and then over the years I developed a very theoretical understanding to music. I started writing music properly when I got to secondary school for my studies, and then it became a hobby. Ever since then I’ve gradually adapted my styles until I got to this stage now.
Where does the name ‘Capeface’ come from?
My mate and I had gone up to Sheffield for a rave. Quite a few drinks later, we ended up convincing the DJ’s we were professional MC’s, so they asked us to get up on the mic. When asked for our names, my mate already had his alias, and i was alias-less. At the time, i was wearing a cape fashioned out of a sleeping bag and had some LED glasses on, so under pressure just blurted out ‘Capeface’, and ever since then i just ran with it!
What was the first record/cd/single you bought with your own money for yourself?
I think the first CD I ever bought was actually ‘Air Guitar Anthems’. I used to listen to my parents rock vinyls, (the likes of Black, Sabbath, UFO, Motorhead etc.) when I was a kid. I was brought up on a diet of that and Queen! I was so sure I’d be a lead singer of a rock band …
What are you listening to at the moment?
I’m starting to delve deeper into the underground scene at the moment; I feel I’ve only just skimmed the surface. South London Ordnance, Paleman, Dusky, Blawan are just a few of the people that I’m particularly into right now. Audio Cultures label is pumping out some incredible tunes at the moment as well. Oh and Thology’s also got a new EP out called ‘Introspect’ that’s well worth a listen!
What will music sound like in 10 years?
I couldn’t possibly comment! Capeface has only been going for 9 months, before that I was writing electro house tunes. Judging by that, I’d probably say some Tuvan throat warbling?
What non-music release has the best music?
The stuff John Williams writes is just insanely good, ‘Star Wars’ has incredibly evocative as well as powerful music, so most of the films he writes scores for are just brilliant.
If you could collaborate with anybody living/dead, who would it be?
Probably Freddie Mercury, just an fantastic musician on so many levels, plus the music video would probably be jokes!
Lastly, what’s your alcoholic beverage of choice?
A good fine English Ale, one in particular called ‘Taking the Pith’, plenty of citrus-y undertones, I highly recommend it.
